Washington - There's a load of bling buried in the Earth.

More than a quadrillion tons of diamonds to be exact - or one thousand times more than one trillion - US researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) reported this week.

But don't expect a diamond rush. These naturally occurring precious minerals are located far deeper than any drilling expedition has ever reached, about 90 to 150 miles (145 to 240 kilometers) below the surface of our planet.

"We can't get at them, but still, there is much more diamond there than we have ever thought before," said Ulrich Faul, a research scientist in MIT's Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences.

"This shows that diamond is not perhaps this exotic mineral, but on the scale of things, it's relatively common."

We can grow them in labs now, move along.

Yeah but some people still insist on having their partner prove their love and commitment to them with a very specific little chunk of the earth. At least if we can access that diamond cache a lot more people can get married happily ever after.

The De Beers and their clever marketing :-)

Diamonds are worthless anyway. The only reason they are this expensive is because the diamond cartels keep out a lot of diamonds out of the market, artificially increasing diamond prices by constricting the supply and increase demand through advertising.

They're expensive because women dig schit. Can't blame the cartels for that.

Can't blame women only, we men should have a back bone and refuse to partake in this mass transfer of wealth from ourselves to diamond cartels of buying worthless pieces of carbon to prove that we love women. I also don't blame diamond cartels per say, they have to do what they have to do, i.e. make money out of us gullible people.

So they are only 37x deeper than what the deepest mine in the world goes, with atmospheric pressures of at least 20x normal... Nice and easy to extract

How much of diamonds produced annually go to abrasives industry?

I'd hazard a guess at >80%

We produce consumables for their manufacture, out of 9 products we produce all but 1 are to produce quick cheap industrial grade diamonds
