I'm leaving, but I still want to receive SMSs from banks and WhatsApp when I eventually replace my phone or loose access to some important SA service.

So my main idea is to port to Telkom prepaid, enable roaming and keep the SIM in my backup phone, which is compatible with Telkom VoWifi. I'll try to keep this phone in a separate location.

But I want to register that SIM in the name of a trusted relative who still lives in South Africa. So, if it's lost, stolen or broken, then I can still call her and ask her to do a SIM swap and then receive SMSs for me.

Cant you just use wifi calling? Ive never tried it, but I would assume it wouldnt make a difference to wifi calling if i was on a network here or abroad. Even if they geoblock you could setup a vpn to get around it.

If your phone can do wifi calling, you should be able to make calls and get sms`s as long as you have an Internet connection.

Immigrating? Where did you get in where English is not a requirement? If your bank still relies on SMS you need to change banks.

Many SA banking apps require an SMS OTP as part of the reinstall process. Then there are useful services like Shyft.

And if you buy prepaid electricity for someone back home with the FNB app, you will receive the code by SMS.

(Emigrating 🤦‍♂️ not immigrating)

Vodacom/Telkom prepaid VoWiFi work like a charm overseas (for me, at least).

In fact, I keep roaming deactivated to make sure I still pay local rates.

Not sure about this solution long term though.
