Mastered for iTunes

Why hasn't it really taken off?

It does seem to the superior codec at equal bit rates to mp3

Proprietary?

I know MP3 may not be open source but open source versions do exist, such as LAME.

Mp3 is also recognised by all devices, even cheapie CD/DVD players.

Interesting article on iTunes and the loudness wars: http://www.gearjunkies.com/news_info.php?news_id=8743

I don't think that's the same as the problem of compression. Songs tend to be mastered to be louder and the difference between the softest and loudest parts is reduced. I think this happens in the mastering studio before the song goes to CD, Bluray, radio, iTunes, Amazon etc.

If they're measuring the perceived loudness, then they can make tracks with too much dynamic range compression quieter. Good thing if they can and do do this.

For data compression it's always better to store the audio in a lossless format. Then it's easy to convert that to whatever lossy format is required by any particular device at a particular time. That's why we don't and won't pay for lossy audio formats.

Some bands also aren't on services like iTunes because they rightly want their music sold as albums only.

I has some "clean" versions of Eminems songs, iTunes match replaced them with explicit versions.

Any way to get match to censor the explicit versions.
