Ananias Mathe has been sentenced to 54 years in jail by the High Court in Johannesburg, which described Mathe as a dangerous, hardened criminal who terrorised his victims.

Judge Geraldine Borchers said she doubted Mathe had a chance of being rehabilitated.

Mathe will be considered for parole only after serving 43 years of his sentence, by which time he would be 76-years-old.

Surprisingly, the Mozambican was all smiles after the sentence was handed down. Asked how he felt, he gave a thumbs up.

He was convicted and sentenced for a total of 64 charges.
Mathe was sentenced to 18 years for each of the six counts of rape and house robbery with an intent to rape. He received another 15 years for a seventh count of rape.

He was given 15 years for each of the six counts of housebreaking with intent to rob and robbery with aggravated circumstances.

The Mozambican was also sentenced to 15 years for each of his four convictions of attempted murder. He received 12 years for each house breaking with intent to rob and robbery and for each house breaking with intent to rape and attempted rape.

He was also convicted for theft, robbery, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, malicious damage to property, attempted rape, possession of implements for car breaking and housebreaking, housebreaking with intent to steal and theft, escaping from lawful custody and attempted escape from lawful custody.

Borchers said Mathe showed no remorse for what he had done as he pleaded not guilty to all the charges against him except the two escape charges.

HTF do all of those charges compute to 54 years? Surely more like 154? What the hell is going on?

Thumbs up for a roof over his head and meals every day? Don't they have the death penalty where he comes from? If so, hand him over.

I disagree. Sentencing is meant to punish those that commit crime and to serve as an deterrent to those who might. Ask the 6 women that were raped whether 54 years is enough.

wrong, our criminal justice system is not for an act of revenge, its simply to remove those from society who cannot function and belong in it....
hence whY I believe in the death penalty..

but , seeing that we don't have it, we have to remove this guy from society, he will never see the light again.... if he does he will be an old man where he cannot harm it further, that is the whole point of the criminal judicial.

Scum like this deserves to take a long walk off the short end of a rope.

Does the evidence say that this guy is guilty? If so then kill him quickly and get it over with. The next one will either have to work harder not to get caught or not do anything to get caught for.

funny enough, when the constitutional court discarded capital punishment as the death Penalty, they acknowledge that if a referendum be drawn then the majority of SA would vote for the death penalty and that it can be constitutional, critics accused them of bias, apparently they responded to every 'posible argument in the 183 page ruling' I would love to get my hands on that paper to be honest.

Removing people from society was the original purpose of prison, only so that they had a place to confine them to until they were killed. Seeing as we've changed the latter, I don't see why we should be ruled by the former.

Many judgments have been handed down to serve as a warning and deterrent to others.

the sentences run concurrently, thats how they come to 54 years, another great thing about our legal system :(

thats 54 years that our tax money will be paying for this f@cker to stay alive, i say put a bullet in his head and then send the empty shell to the parents to pay for it like the chinese do!

Mathe will be long dead before he's 76 (his parole chance),
After being recently convicted of 64 counts, which included rape, housebreaking and robbery, he was sentenced to a total of 497 years in jail, but will serve an effective 54 years.

Despite passing the lengthy sentences, the judge said it would be ridiculous to expect Mathe to live for more than 400 years.

I'm with hyperian on this. I remember years back someone being sentenced for over 160 years and at the time it did not make sense to me until someone explained that if he should appeal to some of the charges and win, he will still have no hope what so ever to get out of jail, ever.

Should some of the rape victims now be intimidated and scared into refuting their accusations, then there are grounds for the other charges to make sure he stays put behind bars.
