Mathematician

Hello everyone :)

I want to be a mathematician but I don't actually know how long it takes to become one. Does anybody know?? And what job(s) can a mathematician have here in South Africa?

You shouldn't be going into a field like pure mathematics unless you are passionate about the subject. A good test would be to see how interesting you find the Numberphile videos on Youtube.

Then a full Ph.D. at the bare minimum, with lots of research articles.

B.Sc. - about 3 years.
B.Sc. Hons. - 1 to 2 years, ideally just 1.
M.Sc. - 2 years or so.
Ph.D. - 3 to 4 years.

About 5 - 10 years of active research and contribution to the field after all that for full professorship, I think.

Yup, what he said.

CTM, the only thing I would add is that from what I've seen, maths is a lot more competitive and a lot more political than many other disciplines. Very few mathematicians ever become full Professors at all - they stay at the Senior Lecturer to Assoc. Prof. level. This is one of the reasons I decided to go the CS route. I would be careful what you wish for here - I would suggest pairing your pure maths degree (or app maths, or stats degree - depending on what you really mean by "mathematician") with at least 2 years of CS during your undergrad, just so that you can fall back on something that will make you a good living outside academia if necessary.

when I started to study my coach started with his PhD in maths full time.

when I finished my three degrees he was still doing his PhD, think he completed it two years later actually.

Ph.D. is generally 4 years, but it's not abnormal to finish a year sooner or later than that.
