Johannesburg - Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga announced in a media briefing on SABC 1 on Monday that the class of 2013 received a pass rate of 78.2%.

Matrics will be able to get their individual results from Tuesday 7 January at 06:00.

Results will be available at schools, exam centres or in major newspapers. They can also be obtained from the department of basic education’s website.

The Independent Examinations Board (IEB) matric pass rate increased to 98.6% for 2013.

Call for a 50% pass rate

On Sunday University of the Free State vice chancellor Jonathan Jansen called for government to raise the matric pass rate to 50%.

At the time Jansen said that no matter what the pass rate, the results where “grossly misleading”.

"These pass rates are still calculated at a base of 30% in some subjects and 40% in others."

I'm pretty sure you can get any pass rate you want as long as you lower standards and adjust marks upwards.

I heard Angie dismiss critics by saying the experts she listens to tells her it's fine and dandy. 'Cos that's how it works, you ignore the ones that says stuff you don't like.

:wtf:

Ignorance combined with low standards, a deadly combination ..

Maybe a teacher can chime in (I'm looking at you Picard :p).

Since there is no more higher grade and standard grade what is the standard of the unified curriculum? If it is the same/close to the old higher grade standard I can see the rationale behind the 30% pass decision, assuming that it would roughly be the same as a 40% pass on standard grade.

I dont know why this passmark is making headlines now. the previous syllabus passmark used to be around that for HG. What i am more concerned about is the amount of 6As guys who cant handle varsity work. Something which the previous B/Cs didn't have a problem doing.

30 and 40% :wtf: How will some cope with uni and college?

Do they go to Uni or College? Some people do trades and high school marks is not the 'be all and end all'.

In Oz, there are no 'fails'...the marks are normalised to a Uni entrance score from 100 down and typically you need >99 to do medicine even 98 to do physio, but can still do teaching down at 30 or 40 depending on some Uni's demand. You can get 'any' result really and the minumum normalised score would be 25....you then go and work in an office etc and work yourself to top with social skills ;-)

Any one know where I can can results online, want to get my brothers
