Johannesburg - Matric preliminary exams in Gauteng will be postponed because of a public servants strike, an official said on Wednesday.

"I can confirm that the exams have been postponed indefinitely," said provincial education spokesperson Charles Phahlane.

He said he could not give more details yet.

A national public servants strike entered its eighth day on Wednesday, severely disruption schooling and hospital services.

The preliminary matric exams were to have started in two weeks.

The strike by teachers may force the Department of Basic Education to postpone matric trial exams as the Free State and Eastern Cape education department have already delayed them.

Preliminary exams in the Western Cape are expected to go ahead at most schools in the province next week, the Cape Times reported.

all we need are lots of laptops and cheap bandwidth, then all those teachers can go **** themselves.

as usual, in the third world, if you have money and can afford private services, you're fine.
for those who rely on the government, the cycle of poverty continues.

Johannesburg - The Gauteng education department postponed the preliminary matric exams for two weeks on Wednesday because of the national public service strike.

"The Gauteng department of education has regrettably taken a decision to postpone the preliminary examinations for two weeks," spokesperson Charles Phahlane said.

Exams were scheduled to start on September 3, but would now start the week of September 20, said Phahlane.

Also, the papers would be written in the afternoons with catch-up programmes in the mornings.

Strike

He said the strike by public servants, including teachers, had necessitated the move.

"Firstly, the current strike conditions make it difficult to continue with the exams immediately, and secondly, once the public sector strike ends, it will be necessary to catch up on teaching time.

"It will therefore be necessary to twin exams with the catch-up programme," said Phahlane.

He said the department "empathised with the stress" matriculants and their parents were experiencing.

Study guides were available on www.thutong.gov.za or www.education.gpg.gov.za. SABC public service radio stations were broadcasting education programmes, said Phahlane.
