Johannesburg – Gauteng's MEC for education, Panyaza Lesufi, has said all matrics should write the same exams, Netwerk24 reported on Friday.

"People are claiming that pupils writing the National Senior Certificate [NSC] exams are poor and that these papers are easy. They also claim that those who write the Independent Examination Board's [IEB] exams are rich and that these papers are difficult," Lesufi said at an imbizo held on the East Rand on Thursday.

It would make the gap between rich and poor smaller if all pupils were to write the same exams, he said.

"In the end, all the pupils are going to function in the same economy, but don’t do the same assessment to see if they will be capable of doing so."

He said when the South African education system is graded, the grading organisations only take the NSC exams into account.

Distorted perception of SA education system

"For that reason, not everyone is taken into account, because there are about 11 000 pupils nationally who write the IEB exams as part of the private education system."

As a result of this, he said, there is a distorted perception of the education system, because not everyone is considered when the gradings are announced.

"For instance, when we are compared to France, they don’t get the full picture. They have to. Pupils should not be excluded. When, for example, we are ranked 42nd, we could possibly have been 41st if all the pupils had been taken into account."

Yes, let everyone write the IEB. Might move us from 42nd to 71st, hey Panzerfaust chappie?

I don't get the correlation between the exam board and wealth... still, why not improve the quality of the NSC exams if you want to improve the ranking because making the easier to improve the pass rate isn't working.

So you want to dumb down everybody to the same level. Why not instead make everybody write the IEB exams, surely if your education system is good then the candidates should have no problem passing the exams?

I honestly don't get this mentality where we all need to be lowered to the lowest common denominator in order to be equal, fsck this continent is a fscking disgrace!

This is stupid. You don't improve education by measuring sht differently. You improve education by teaching better.

The simple fact is that private school provide better education (mainly by throwing more money at it). Write whatever exams you like it won't change that simple fact.

All the private schools write IEB. That creates the correlation right there.

It also has various knock-on effects:
-IEB students on avg come from better socio economic backgrounds
-IEB students on avg have better support structures backing them
-IEB students don't have to deal with malnutrition etc

All this means that you can safely make the IEB exams more difficult. (And yes it is more difficult)

The ironic part is that for varsity entrance the two are treated equally. One of my friends was told point blank you're not going to make matric exemption, switch to public school (grade 10). Switched, got a 1-2 grade boost from it & made it into engineering.

still, why not improve the quality of the NSC exams
You don't improve the quality of exams. You improve the quality of the teaching and this leads to better exam results.

There's the problem right there. Our education system sucks.

No, not all. The school my kids go to now, arguably one of the better ones in PE academically, is not currently using the IEB curriculum. Seeing as it's also one of the more expensive schools in the area you might understand why the correlation wasn't so obvious to me.

What a stupid stupid moron. He has now unequivocally demonstrated the 'superior logic' made famous by Julias... and this tappet is in charge of education... alea jacta est

**** Lesoufflé. By the time he possibly gets this right, my last child will be at uni. But yes, dumbing down seems to be the way to go with the ANC. It is not a race thing here, as the school my kids attend is quite a mixed bag of races. Going through with this, the ANC will end up with less clever blacks, which still seems to be their ultimate goal.

Ah right. Well apologise if I was generalising too broadly. You're quite right they don't ALL use IEB as I claimed. Enough to create a strong correlation though.

Yep, should have an exam set by the uni/department you are trying to get into that we can standardize across universities. So all who want to do Mech. Engineering do a test set by e.g. UCT and approved by Wits/UJ etc. . We already write the NBT where it shows that those who do IEB have higher marks, but it hardly counts at all.

A lot of private schools teach IEB and at the end you write the normal NSC certification.
Here are the schools that write the IEB examination: http://www.ieb.co.za/School/schoolsthatwriteieb.php

Never argue with an idiot. They drag you down to their level, then beat you with experience

Weell said.

I see the name of the new school my kid is going to next year for high school :) Going to be a bit of an academic shift, coming from NSC, but worth it in the end I think.
He/she will be fine as long as standards are comparable. Spent have my school time on a foreign curriculum & wrote IEB just fine. Maths is maths.

LOL!

They write different exams because their entire level of education is different.

Muppets.
