A matriculant from Bushbuckridge died when he fell over 200m off a vertical cliff at the Three Rondawels in the Blyde River valley, Beeld reported on Monday.

Thulani Sithole, 18, a pupil at the Inyamande High School, was among a group of 50 pupils on a day visit to the area at the weekend.

According to a witness, some of the school boys consumed alcohol, and then, at about 3.30pm, shortly before the group would have left the area, Sithole climbed over the viewing platform and stood on the edge of the precipice, the newspaper reported.

He lost his balance and fell to his death in front of a friend, Devine Slauwe, 18.

Rescue workers were summoned, but because it was getting dark, they were not able to retrieve Sithole's body until Sunday morning.

The Mpumalange education department said on Sunday it would investigate the tragedy, in order to draw up guidelines to ensure that pupils were safer during school outings.

" The Gods of Olympus have abandoned me, now there is no hope."

And Thulani cast himself off from the highest point he could find.

Proof that our education system is failing.
It doesn't take a genius to know that drinking and balancing precariously on the edge of a drop is stu-stu-stu-stupid.

It does suck however for his family and friends.

At least this one had alcohol in his system.

That's not the education system. That's the family and friends and community failing to instill common sense.

Sorry to say but if you're educated then your up bringing should not play a part.
Stupid is stupid.

Rubbish. Where in the curriculum is common sense taught? It's not. It's part of your life skills, not academic skills.

Natural selection at work.

Depends where your kid goes to school I guess.
My son's school certainly teaches common sense.

It is just drunk horseplay that caused the loss of a life. The question is obviously why do the teachers not have control over the drunk school boys? Failed education system...

And pray do tell how the teachers are supposed to control kids when they are not allowed to implement any form of discipline? The kids have zero respect for their elders.

I see a physics lesson, a mathematics lesson, a chemistry lesson and a life skills lesson coming from this.
