Ok, I did something I usually never do..

I bought some headsets without reading a review, not checking it out at all in anyway from Matrix Warehouse. They were cheap (R150.00) so I didnt expect the best of the best.

I got home and set it up, logged on some online gaming and the rest of the clan members all said I sound like I'm taking with my head in the toilet..

I spent about an hour configuring the mic with Windows 7 + Mumble, still I had my head in the toilet. Switched back to my old setup using my webcam mic and I was crystal clear again and the guys could hear what it was I was saying.
This was the Saturday.

The Monday I called Matrix and told them this headset mic has issues. I wanna return it but I can only come by on Saturday again. The Dude said it was cool and it's within the 7 days , no problem.

I rock up on Saturday and tell the store manager my problem and he says that they have a policy that the product needs to be booked in to warranty if brought back, the need to test it/long story long story...

So I eventually get the headset booked into warranty and I'm told that they will call me in the week to let me know whats happening... It's Thursday today, and still no call.. I get an sms asking me to come by a 23" monitor instead :P

My thing is:
I do not want that brand of headsets again
(can't remember which brand it is, but it was the only brand they had in store)
I would like to get my moneys back
(as I returned it in the same packaging that it left the store in)
They will not give my moneys back
(instead swop it for a new one off the shelf - which i guess will have the same crappy mic)

I don't have a problem in paying more for a proper headset (I don't know why i didn't do that in the 1st place)
but not one from their store as its all the same crappy brand...

So I'm posting here (not sure if this is the right section - Mod please move if not) to find out from you guys if I've poked my eye out on this one or is there something I can do to get my cash moneys back?

Thanks for reading my wall of text and thank you for you replies.

Why not buy something else from them then?

Lots of stores have a "no money back" policy. Instead they'll give you credit for whatever you return.

You made the mistake, you won't get your money back.

Are you sure it is not your setup in windows that is the problem?

Oh right, ok.. that is an idea.. I will have to think of what other gadgets i can get from them then.. hmmm

I dont know, I have never been impressed with their accessories. The paint has come off the keys on my keyboard, the scroll wheel on my mouse stopped working. Their stuff is real chinamart quality. Just cut your losses, go to CNA or whatever and get a decent make.

I thought the new CPA defined time-frames and conditions whereby a retailer must provide a full cash refund* for sold goods?
Wish I had a link/reference to the thing, can someone confirm?

* There are terms and conditions here based on the type of good (i.e. consumable etc..)

I don't think it works when someone has opened the package.

if the product is defect within 6 months, then you should be able to claim a refund .... so if they do find it defective ... u do not have to accept their policy of exchange only .. just mention the CPA and have the NCC number on hand and call while you there ... mayb that will scare them into doing the right thing :)

He didn't make a mistake - he bought something and expected a working microphone - he didn't get that, its not fit for purpose.... under the CPA he can request a refund, if they don't give it, tell them you'll report them, and do just that.

What if they test it and the mic is fine? How does the cpa then cover you? They will never swop it out if it works on their side.

Like taking a broken motherboard to rectron only to find it works, they will give it back to you and say sorry it's working fine we cannot change it.

If it doesn't work properly with his PC - and his PC meet the required specs, its still not fit for purpose.

If the mic works fine there is nothing you can do. You buy cheap stuff, don't be surprised if your voice sounds cheap.
Matrix does sell a lot of cheapo stuff and I have also been burned over the years, but I just took it as a learning experience.
I still buy a crapload of stuff from them, but I know if the price is really good, then there is the risk that it might not be top of the range stuff.
Plain common sense to me.

Having said that... I bought a pair of Surround Sound headphones from them for about R350 and they are awesome! The sound is great and they are solid made.

So they finally called me back (yesterday).. been busy otherwise and I didnt really give this much thought.. I see alot of mixed opinions here.. I know I was an idiot.. I never just walk in a store and buy tech unless I know exactly what I'm buyin.. I don't know why I did though.. I was there and I seen it, so I got it... impulse was sayin no, but I did it anyway...

Anyway, They did find that the mic was faulty.. they will replace it with a new one.. which by the looks of things I think will still not be up to stratch.. So I've already cut my losses here, I will just swop it for something else, don't know what yet..

Under the new CPA rules, you have up to six months to return an item if you are not happy with it. CPA policy trumps company policy everytime, and in fact, company policy becomes illegal, as the company has to abide by the CPA rules, which is the law.
I bought an item at well known store and two moths later I experienced a problem with it. At first they told me that they have a 14 day money back policy, and that they now have to send it away for repairs under warranty. I insisted that I wanted to speak to the manager and told him that I will take the product back with me and will contact the newspapers to let them know that this company does not abide by the CPA policies. The manager then asked to look at the item and said, that as it was still in a good condition, that they will replace it or refund me, which they then duly did.
The CPA rules states clearly that if a customer is not happy with the quality of a product, then that customer has up to 6 months to return the item and decide whether they want a refund, have it replaced with another unit or have it repaired. The decision is yours and these companies are just trying their luck.
Also note, that it does not matter what the price of the item is, as some companies will tell you that the CPA rules do not apply to products over a certain price, which total hogwash.
