Greetings

I use a 64 bit Toshiba Tecra laptop with 4096 MB of DDR3 RAM (1,066 MHz). Would I see a marked performance increase if I doubled that?

Thanks
Don

It really depends on what you're using it for.
It depends on the applications, the amounts of applications loaded at once and the files sizes.
If, for example, you use it for CGI, DAW usage you might see an increase, depending on the file size, otherwise 4Gig Ram is still plenty.

I doubt it. Installing a faster hard drive will though. Are you running a 5400rpm drive?

If you use virtual machines then yes. Else very little difference. Also note that once you go over this threshold your Windows OS must be 64-bit to harness the benefits of extra RAM.

Thanks to all who answered. I use my laptop mostly for browsing, emails and Office related functions.

for that 4GB is more than enough; if you really want agility and quick responsive system (and you can afford it), I would go for droid's suggestion--install a fast HDD/hybrid (the seagate hybrid drives a a gem--I have one (an earlier model with 4GB SDD front-end), and I must admit the system is faster than when I had a 7200RPM HDD--boot times and launching programs (apps) are so much quicker, makes working on your PC a enjoyable.
