Hi

Were don't seem to be able to get more than 400 kbits/s on out 512 kbits/s uncapped line at work.

Just wondering if any one else is experiencing it.

I also tested my adsl at home which should be 384 kbit/s the most i could get was 333 kbits/s (tough only did some quick test ie downloaind a file from ftp.is.co.za)

With the work one we've been testing it for a couple weeks.

Apparently according to the IS technical person the line and distance are fine.

I'm just wondering if anyone else is experiencing this or has some sugestions?

Tim

It's probably the ADSL line, our 384 kbps line never performs faster than ~ 320 kbps so you aren't alone :p

I don't think there is anything you can do to make a significant difference...:(

You are misunderstanding

Your line speed is 512Kilobits per second

As telkom says for DSL its not guaranteed

In a perfect world one could probably reach the theoretical maximum however

Well, there is this thing of overheads on a line. i.e.: you will never attain full speed of line.

I'm on 512 uncapped satellite and getting approximately 420-450kbps international. Seems that is about the standard.

Hope it helps.

Ok

Just was wondering as it seem to max out at 400kbits/s and never goes about it. So from what you guys have said this seem to be normal.

Ah well.

Just thought it was weird to loose about 100k

I have got excellent line SNR and Attenuation as below:
Upstream 256 kbps
Downstream 512 kbps
SNR Margin (Upstream) 13.0 db
SNR Margin (Downstream) 28.5 db
Line Attenuation (Upstream) 4.5 db
Line Attenuation (Downstream) 14.0 db

On both IS and SAIX account I only get max 450kbps download speed.

Sounds about right. On must remember ADSL is built on ATM technology resulting in all of your data being split into 48 byte cells, each with a 5 byte header. This cell header represents a ~10% overhead (excluding PPP/IP overhead) so your throughput is going at near theoretical max.
