My dads work pc is clearly messed up. It was stuck in a reboot loop so I tested the HD and memory and found everything to be fine. I formatted and fresh installed XP. Everything was going well when after installing some program and rebooting, suddenly pci.sys file was corrupted or missing. Replaced that and got back into XP. Again, all was fine. Installed Nero and rebooted again and now after post I am met with a black screen. No error. Nothing.

Since the HD is fine according to seatools, and Ubuntu live works fine, I reckon shutting down windows must cause some kind of error with the boot sector? Must be the motherboard, right?

In any case, my dad has lots of end of year accounting and stuff to do and simply HAS to have a pc like TODAY or TOMORROW at the latest. This pc of his is gonna take longer than that to fix so we're probably going to get a laptop (which he can use for himself after the pc is fixed) or just a simple tower.

I called Incredible Connection and their simple tower was R4500 and that was only with 1 gb of memory. It did have a 3 year warranty though, which is handy for a business.

Any other ideas for a reasonably priced laptop or pc (just a tower) that I can get here in Cape Town? It would pain me to buy from IC as that's clearly a rip off price for something so simple.
