Mozambique government forces have seized a second military base of the former Renamo rebels, a week after raiding the group's main base, a presidential spokesman told AFP on Tuesday.

"There was an exchange of fire but no loss of human life," during the attack Monday on the base in Maringue in central Mozambique, Edson Macuacua said.

"Their two main bases were Sathundjira and Maringue and they have been deactivated," he said, describing the second base as a temporary but large structure.

"They are weak at the moment with the deactivation of these two bases."

Government troops last week attacked Renamo's main bush camp at Sathundjira in the central Gorongosa mountains, where the group's leader Afonso Dhlakama was based.

Renamo claimed one of its lawmakers was killed in that attack.

After their base was taken, the group accused the government of breaking the 1992 peace agreement which ended the 16-year civil war Renamo launched against the socialist Frelimo state shortly after independence from Portugal.

Renamo became the main opposition party after the agreement, but has lost every national election since.
