No, not a Mazda from 1984, a Mazda that thinks it's 1984.

Seems like you can't turn off the [-]telescreen[/-] "infotainment system", only turn it down.

In short, does anyone know how to turn off the radio in the Mazda CX5?

You can turn it off(the screen that is) in the Settings. And one press on the volume knob mutes it completely.
The reason it can't be turned off completely is because it displays any errors so if you're driving and something goes wrong the screen will display the error. How will it do that if you shut it down completely everytime you get in.

By the way do you have the new infotainment system with the BMW style centre knob? I assume you do. I have a feeling it will get Android Auto in the future so don't knock it just yet. Even in its current form the system is elegantly simple to use(Less is more) and that's a good thing when you're driving.

Apple advert style. Tempting...

Not the whole system, just the radio. I don't want it running all the time, muted, chewing up the already limited life of the amp's caps, feeding noise into the system; I want it off, pulled to ground, powered down.

In that case what I do is switch to the music on my phone via bluetooth or usb. You can play nothing or press stop. So nothing is playing.

Is that what you want? just switch the input even if its to something not connected or not playing

There's a difference between "off" and "nothing playing". I want it off. A brief search online confirms that Mazda is indeed trying to emulate Big Brother - it can't be turned off.

As for Android Auto, it sounds interesting, but it's not my car, it's my mother's.

Smart Woman. Is it such a big problem though? The thing has Wifi as well and can connect to open wifi AP's as you move and do all sorts of fancy things. How often do you turn your phone off?

I bought her a tablet a few years ago, and she still hasn't figured out how to use it. Can't learn, won't learn, who knows. Anyway, I don't like seeing electronics powered up and idle - it's not good for them and just poor practice. If an amp has a mute source, it's just going to be amplifying the noise floor and pushing that through the speakers. I prefer absolute silence.

And WiFi? Are you ****ting me? What does a car need WiFi for. I assure you, nobody's going to read the manual, so hopefully that thing is secure by default. What next?!?!

It's basically a tablet in that dash and once Android Auto comes along you will never ask "What for" again. You probably won't be able to live without it.
