Assuming we are talking about the new shape models here:

Mazda 3 is in a higher segment to i20 and all round better car. If you can AFFORD it, go for it.

New i20 is a beaut as well but not in the same league as Mazda3.

Honda Ballade or Brio, hell no. I'm all for not buying a car purely based on looks but these cars are vomit inducing.

Thanks for the input guys.
Another twist . Mazda offering 20K less for my trade in .. so R500 became a R1K . Wife says no( car is for her ). So she threw the honda balade elegance in the mix. Comes to exactly same as i20 ( they offering a discount ).
Only reviews I can find online are from car journalist ( average 6/10) and a few disgruntled owners.
Honda has nice features though but butt ugly ?

I had the Ballade before I got my CRZ. Rather get the Honda.

Mazda 3 is out. Best drive out of the lot. I agree much more superior but the model i'm looking at, lack some features we got accustomed to .
rear view camera / cruise and the fact that I'm looking for affordability and fuel economy . At R1K more for a demo it negates the affordability factor.
The ballade ticks most the boxes but the i20 has a more solid drive. Feature wise the ballade beats both hands down. Rear view , cruise control , touch screen.the drum brakes though  the i20 still lacks the updated interior.
80% is going to be city driving and dropping / picking up kids from school. so ballade it is.
I looked at 1 year olds but most dont offer Bluetooth which is becoming a std feature and Id like some future proofing.
So Honda Ballade Elegance tops the list.
Still have this week to decide.

You can't go wrong with a Honda, they are really reliable cars and they should give you good service :)

My previous car before my current Hyundai was a 1996 Honda Ballade that survived hitting a bushbuck, an attempted hijacking, 5 years of potholed farm roads and somehow it just kept on going without the engine so much as being opened aside from the normal cambelt changes and spark plugs and oil changes
