Mazda MX6 automatic gearbox - Help please

Let it be known that I am a hopeless case when it comes to the mechanical part of a car. Maybe someone knows someone who knows someone, which will be greatly appreciated so here goes:

I had a new engine put in a while back. Since then the 'hold' light in the dash keeps flashing. Under normal circumstances this light comes on when you press the 'hold' button on the gear lever, which keeps the current gear for a while longer if need be. (or something like that)

These days it just comes on by itself once I go into second gear the first time and then it stays that way. I noticed that because of this there is a slight jerk between 1st and 2nd gear, which is quite irritating. Another symptom of this flashing light is that it does not go into the last gear. This means that once I go above 100km/h the revs are too high, so I just stay at a low speed and moderate revs. (safe but not right)

I drive it now in manual between first and second gear, but that's not healthy for the car I think?! And I need to drive to the coast soon.

The guy that put the engine in for me didn't know what is causing it. Does anyone have any idea or maybe had a similar problem. At the moment I'm a little tight on moola with it being the end of the year and what not so taking it to the agents will leave me pennyless. :( I'm hoping for a simple fix, like maybe reset something. I hope it's not my gearbox that needs to be replaced. Here's to hoping.

It's a Mazda MX6 2.5 V6. ANY help will be appreciated!

Those auto boxes are known to break. R45k for a new one iirc. Engine out again as well.

So much for a merry Christmas then.

Thanks for the response Darkwing.

I personally think the wire between your hold switch on the gear lever and the gearbox is permanently shorted or not connected at all, depending of the layout.

This will keep it in "hold" mode. I am not an automatic box specialist but logic tells me that the engine change has contributed to the problem and not the box. The box worked beforehand, why not after the change.
There could also be some vacuum connections from the engine to box which are missing, blocked or wrongly connected.

I might be wrong but I would start to find the problem there.

Doesnt the Ford telstars/tx5's have the same auto boxes (since they share the same platform and engines)

@Stokstert - I will start searching for someone that can check out that wiring for me to see whether that might be the fault. I really hope so! Thanks for the info.

@Dohc-WP - Don't know about the Telstar but what I do know is that it's the same as the Mazda 626. Now that I think I remember something like that from the last service when I caught a glimpse of the manual the spares salesman used to pick out the correct service parts. I will do some googling and see what I get. Think you are right.

Had it for a year and a half now and have not changed those.

Should aways change the oil & filters when buying any 2nd hand auto. That R1000 spent then would have saved you thousands. Saffers seem to think that autos are a sealed unit that never needs servicing :rolleyes:

Thanks Darkwing. Checked out your link and learned something. Hopefully I can still sort something out with it before it finally goes bang.

Trial and error

ok me posting again and hoping someone can give me an answer. on my mx6 auto the gearbox guys are saying the car is in protect mode now and it will not leave that mode so they have to put on diagnostics to switch it off? what does this mean exactly?

The mechanic probably pinched the wiring loam when he installed the engine
