South Africa's new driver's licence card delayed

South Africa's transport minister Fikile Mbalula has announced that the country's new driving licence card is expected to launch a year later than planned.

A Driving Licence Card Account (DLCA) tender to upgrade South Africa's driving licence system had set an October 2022 launch deadline, but Mbalula said he expects the new system to be piloted in October 2o23.

I've probably missed an article with the answer, but what do we do when pulled over with an expired license card (even though we've applied at the Traffic Department for a new one and paid for it) I personally just ensured I had the proof of payment of my renewal in my vehicle at all times. Luckily got my new card after 6 months the other day...

Will we receive another extension?

My licence expired in April last year but was "extended" till March 2022

A lot of the insurance companies seem to be lost judging from the previous article.

Apparently keep getting a temp indefinitely..

I say F that! I'm also driving around with my receipt and proof of renewal, that's my "temp"

South Africa faced a backlog of nearly 400,000 driver’s licence renewals at the start of December 2021
licences that will have expired by 31 March currently stands at 2.1 million
If my maths is correct ((2 100 000 - 400 000)/4) = 425 000 licenses are expiring each month at that rate.
The DLCA has revealed that it can currently produce just over 400,000 licence cards per month at maximum capacity
With a maximum rate of 400 000, it means they will never catch up, especially since they a) still have the backlog to deal with and b) nothing run by the government is capable of running at maximum capacity.

If your maths is right then yup... So basically the card is now entirely useless and dead.

You just know womeone in government was probably paid a few million to do the math that you just did and report back to them.

You should send your invoice.

Yep they’ll pay a cadre a few bar to send a business analyst in to do just that.

Then announce another license extension. They are a bunch of clowns lol. It’s like forethought and planning is a rumor.

Ive got a question, why have we moved away from having the DL/FAL inside the ID book?
why cant we go back to that? wasn't that better?

or again the ANC decided to be different, and reinvent the wheel, and it blew up spectacularly in their faces.

It probably would work better if the driver's wasn't renewable. I assume it wasn't renewable back in the day?

Same terrorists in power that planted bombs. It's something they are good at - fking **** up

I am not surprised!! Anything this big-mouth-to-much-talking-minister touches turn into ****.
If he says good morning, check the son...

Has anyone tried to rent a car (here or abroad) with an expired licence card and proof of application to renew?
