I really hope and pray Pres Mbeki pulls this off.

President Thabo Mbeki has thrown down the gauntlet to his rival, ANC president Jacob Zuma, telling parliament he wants to set up a bigger, independent unit with “exactly the same role [as that] for which the Scorpions were established.”

Especially maintaining their benefits.

“The complex reorganisation … will not entail any negative effect on the salaries and conditions of service of the current members of the DSO [Directorate of Special Operations, the Scorpions’ formal name].”

The problem with this new unit is their method would be different - and conformative to SAPS investigative methods rather than an independent investigative method. Working closely with the Directorate of Prosecutions is precisely what made the scorpions effective, and removing them from that and placing them inside the SAPS effectively removes their sting.

This new unit is simply lip service to Mbeki critics. The ANC will probably not see this as a challenge to Jacob Zuma.

Maybe Thabo can still save face before he is to bow out.

Scorpions 2!!!

Coming to the corrupt ministerial office near you!!!

For tea and biscuits. After all, what else are they going to be able to do these days?

I just dont understand how the opposition parties can allow them to get away with this. Whilst they might not own the majority of seats in parliament, they can certainly cause much more of a stir and backlash than they have been doing. They could muster public support through petitions and maybe even secure a few more votes. They must have caught the complacency bug, it is spreading like HIV.

Well said!

what more can the opposition parties other than make public their non-support of the disbanding of the scorpions (which they have done) and be ready to launch legal actions shoud the ANC government try to push this through (which they have done).
