For people who want a (well-researched and wide) perspective on the problems of Africa / S.A. , I would really recommend Mbeki's book, Architects of Poverty.

It is a brilliant read and it brings clarity to a lot of the happenings on the continent.

People in this section couldn't be bothered clicking on a link to a story they're questioning. Asking them to go find the info themselves is blasphemous & now you want them to go read a book?! Outrageous! Heretic! Burn her at the stake!!

And oh, "you have been warned:mad:™"

There are one or two posters here who actually bother to read a little wider and to take a less narrow-minded approach, but yes, I know they are few and far between.

Also maybe post it in the books thread, just got my kindle & will add to my collection if it's available on the kindle. I'm battling through the elder Mbeki biographies at the moment & being hard copies means I'll never finish them. Too boring those two.

You'll enjoy ... I am no economist or academic and it even makes sense to me !

Great, Ill go pick up a copy on the way home today (hopefully exclusive books will have it?). Thanks blu, should be an interesting read.

Pleasure. Yes, we got ours from Exclusive.

Let me know what you think of it.

Reading the paper every day, we get so involved and consumed by Malema saying this or Cele saying that, that it becomes hard to see the bigger picture.

In this sense, Mbeki is really good, IMO, in lifting the reader out of the immediate and the basics and giving an elevated view of African politics. Most of the book is about Zim and SA, because those are the countries he is most familiar with. His explanation of why Zim became a failed stated is so well analyzed and well worth a read, even as a chapter on its own.
