Pretoria - Reserve Bank governor Tito Mboweni failed to collect a memorandum from union members picketing outside the bank's offices in Pretoria on Wednesday, the bank said.
"The governor was in a meeting... the monetary policy committee is meeting today [Wednesday] and tomorrow [Thursday]," SARB spokesperson Brian Hoga told Sapa.
The National Union of Metalworkers of SA said it was "disgusted" that the governor had not appeared, and instead sent a representative to collect the memorandum.
"This sort of unacceptable behaviour by individuals from the ranks of our ANC-led national liberation movement must be dealt with rigorously. The union shall take up this issue," president Cedric Gina said.
According to Gina, the memorandum stated that internationally there had been a much more robust approach to the lowering of interest rates than there had been at the SARB.
