The Pretoria Equality Court has dismissed the discrimination case against former Reserve Bank Governor Tito Mboweni, calling it "a storm in a tea cup".

Businessman Mario Pretorius asked for reparations after a 2008 reserve bank shareholders meeting during which Mboweni said Pretorius should not speak to him the way white people used to speak to black people.

"I am sure the complainant (Pretorius) was not adversly affected by discrimination. The court finds utterance was spontaneous, reactionary and off the cuff, and was according to the court's objective standards, a genuine expression of dismay at being spoken to in a fashion that was rude and condesending. It was in the opionion of the court not designed to label complainant as a racist or to take liberties with Pretorius's dignity but to take charge of the meeting," said Magistrate Siva Padayachee.

"The complaint is dismissed," said Padayachee.

Outside the court Mboweni did not speak to reporters.

However, Pretorius said "We will get the transcript and see if there is anyway we can take it further, but we have to respect the judge."

"I think he made a racist statement in my heart. I am deeply disappointed that the judge saw this as a storm in a tea cup. I always have respected Mr Mboweni, but I judge a person by their actions."

A racist comment would be that which categorises a certain group of people in a condescending manner. So basically Mboweni was saying that all white people used to speak down to black people, and that this individual in this instance was also using that kind of tone. Sounds racist to me and I also would have been personally offended at it.

But no surprise with the sweeping it under the carpet.

Actually referring to the fact that a white guy laid the charge. If a black person laid a charge of racism Zuma would probably personally back the guy, remember the Mbeki & Investec debacle ? Malema would be filling stadiums with morons and libraries and schools would possible be burned.
 
But we know that only whites can be racist to blacks. The other way round is simply a reactionary response brought on by previously committed oppression, even if said oppression happened decades ago by a previous generation.

Don't take the tone that blacks used to take behind whites backs

what he said was wrong, and had it been the other way around, this whole country would have been up in arms threatening with militant action.... but as was rightly pointed out:

There we go those can go to court, this case was about silly boardroom jabs and bites. It happens everyday.
If it was the other way around the judge would have still thrown this stupid case out... stop being silly south african whities constantly moaning and crying like little pussies: "ooooo the blacks will rally, we should go to australia"

Uhm nothing silly about this. About 2 years ago a black guy complained racism cos white people at his place of work can't properly pronounce his name. It was everywhere in the news and iirc also a thread on here.

there is a theory which asserts that "whites" perceive themselves as unique race contrasted with 9/10's of the population;
the rest of us just are who we are :)

And?? Anyone can file a complaint... The case was thrown out right??
If not then I am going to australia :D

link? i'd be interested to read that.

i remember when i was at uni i worked on a house with a black guy in my class. i'm white, btw. he was chatting to me about this girl who used to be in our class. i had no idea who he was talking about. he descibed where she sat in our studio. that she smoked. her hair colour. all sorts of things... it wasn't until he said that she was indian that i had any idea who he was talking about. i've always remebered this and found it interesting. in my brain i was always picturing and trying to remember a white girl. and i would never consider myself as racist.

haha... and typical sympathetic reaction in this thread... the poor whites can do no right... and the oppressed blacks can do no wrong. That's the way it is to be right? :D all of us are equal, but some are more equal than others?
 
Saw and heard the hatred in mboweni's voice.. If a whity spoke like that there would have been another story. Must have very noisy there with all the 'people' talking and doing what they want.. Sounds like palament.. LOL! Anyway i hope they find grounds for an appeal. :D
