Hi guys.

I've just been browsing around looking for the best prices on a 17" Macbook Pro, and there aren't a lot of options for good deals here in SA. On the Amazon.co.uk site though, you can get a brand new one for £1750 (R23 000 at current exchange rates) or £1890. Core's a rip-off etc, but what's the deal with either getting something sent over by a friend, or having it brought over by someone who's coming out here? I've searched the forums a bit but haven't found a lot of info... Also, can I assume that a supplier selling through Amazon is authorised?

Thanks..

I regularly get Amazon.com stuff sent or carried over by family.

Tell me about it!!! Makes my blood boil

I want to buy a new iMac and it is R7000 more expensive to buy it in this country. How do these guys at Core get away with it? I'm sure Mr Jobs would be very interested in discovering that we are getting ripped-off in the country. I'm getting very tired of putting up with this crap.

Is there nothing we can do? Sign a petition? email Steve Jobs?

Thanks for the responses.. If it does get posted over, what's the best thing to label it as? Although I don't mind paying import duties, I'd be a bit worried about theft...

I personally wouldn't risk posting it unless you use a recognised international courier like Fedex or UPS. I was once sent a box of about 20 various books from the US that I had worked on. It was a gift from the publisher and I was hit with a R1000 import duty - they had opened it up and valued the content themselves.

Another thing to bear in mind is that when putting on insurance you will need to find out if it covers the destination country also. I sent a parcel to the UK with insurance - it got lost (stolen) and the insurance was void because it happened in the UK. The insurance only covered it while it was in SA!!

Thanks a lot Carl. I have a friend coming out in a few months so I'll see if I can hook that up rather.. Nice discount if I can get it together :)

I am also in the process of trying to get a MBP from the states.

A suggestion I have recently got is to have you're Item sent to a courier service in the USA, where you have arranged for them to receive and forward it to you.

Just now I have sent an email enquiry to a UPS store in New York, to see if they can help out. Will let you know how it goes.

Avoid NY unless you want to pay an extra 8.375%

NY is a relatively recent addition to the short list of states that tax internet purchases. Luckily for me I've also got family in Pennsylvania. :)

So if I order from B&H and have it delivered to family in Texas, I'll still have to pay tax? When did this happen?
