It would appear that my MBP's line in is busted :(

When plugging a microphone into the socket, and going to Preferences -> Sound, and selecting the line-in, I can blow a Vuvuzela into the damn microphone, without the little bar indicator moving a mm :(

Any ideas how else to test the plug?

Did you check your microphone?

Yep, I tried two different microphones already ... nada ... just ran it through Garageband as well, dead!

And there is no crud in the hole?

And the input volume level is up all the way in the pref pane?

Hmm, I tried the reverse usage of the headphones (as in plugging the headphones into the line in) ... and I am picking up sound ... wtf?!

EDIT: Same with my second headset ... speakers work as mic, but mic doesn't work as mic

A regular mic should work. the optical digital input is just a different type.

Just to be sure you've got the line in selected in the sound pref pane and you have the input volume way up (and the mic isnt muted).

Have you ever tried a mic on it before?

Yes, yes and yes

No, I haven't tried a mic before. What  me is the fact that the speakers act properply as a mic, but not the mic

Then there might be something wrong with the mic?

Odd - is it a stereo jack or a mono one on the end?

All my mic's are USB so I dont have anything to test with here.

Thought: The Line-in is actually a line-in, and not a microphone jack in the true sense of the word (well, that's what I am thinking). Maybe these dinky microphones don't produce enough power, and thats why the headphones actually work as a microphone?!?

Yeah - it is a line-in so it might be fussy - how cheap are the microphones?

Stupid suggestion but have you checked system pref - sound - input, to see what your system is using for the mic?

I find I have this problem often when unplugging my USB headset and then plugging back in for Skype.

The one is a plantronics VOIP headset, and the other one is a Genius VOIP headset ... so it should be decent quality (I guess).

Just tried it with another Plantronics VOIP headset at home ... still nothing :(

The Line In jack is NOT a Mic In jack. Line level does not equal mic level. You can plug microphones into line inputs all day without getting anywhere. The problem is the expectation, not the device.

If you want to plug a microphone into a Line In jack, you need a microphone preamp in between.

A Line Input is for devices like CD players, tape players, DVD (audio), and other devices that output at line level.
