IT admins across the globe are letting out a collective groan after servers and PCs running McAfee VirusScan were brought down when the anti-virus program attacked their core system files. In some cases, this caused the machines to display the dreaded blue screen of death.

If you're running v8.5i then you should have no need to panic, but we're not out of the woods yet.

But this story still is ongoing, we will only see the true extend of the problem coming Monday.

To be fair to McAfee the problem only effects scan engine 5100 - this engine version reached end of life in Feb 2008. So for almost a year and a half you've been running a old engine which wouldn't have picked up the latest malware anyway.

If you were effected you only have yourself the blame :)

I hear what you're saying... but what if this sort of thing will happen to the latest engine as well?

This sort of thing makes me jittery and uneasy.

Luckily it doesn't effect the latest engine, but I know what you mean. If it did - it would have been a disaster! Its not like you can test every pattern file they release on a few systems before you update all systems.
