McAfee has apologised to its customers after a routine security update crippled Windows XP PCs.

The update falsely identified the SVCHOST.EXE Windows file as a virus, effectively prompting the McAfee software to attack core operating system files.
So the antivirus became the virus? Nice one McAfee.:D

Edit: Probably should have put this in the "Networking and Security" section. Please feel free to move.

Just about every AV vendor has had major problems with false detections at some stage.

I used to love McAfee, but these days I put it in the same category as Norton.

Please explain?

These reports have been popping up more recently is what I'm getting at. The layman end-user is the one that suffers the most, having to reinstall their OS because an Anti-Virus decided to quarantine/delete vital system files.

Okay, I run Avast free at home (win7 64bit) and all is good so far.

I run Microsoft Security Essentials, cos if Microsoft screws up, at least their patch of the the previous patch might patch things up again. :p

Using MSE and love the product. Used McAfee before but thank goodness I removed it.

So am I going to be staring at the Blue Screen of Death soon? McAafee just helped themselves to another years renewal without asking me. Mind, I haven't had any virus or spyware problems so it can't be all that bad.
