Anyone have any experience with these?

I can get a pretty top-of-the-range one for R10 000. No Windows, though, which is fine since I'll put Ubuntu on it anyway.

Anyone have any stories to share about Mecer laptops? Good or bad.

I sell used/2nd hand laptops and no matter how good a deal I just do not buy Mecer Laptops, from experience. I have almost always had problems with them.

For R10K you can get something mcuh better than Mecer, I would steer clear to be honest...Go HP, lenovo or Dell, cant go wrong there.

Yes but not for the same specs. A R10K HP, lenovo or Dell isn't that good.

mmm ok, whats the specs on the Mecer then...Lets compare apples with apples.

I've started a new job recently and the laptop they've provided me with is a Lenovo T61 Thinkpad.

Centrino Core 2 Duo @ 2.1Ghz
2GB RAM
160GB HDD
Vista Business
15.4" Screen
Bluetooth & Wireless
Gigabit LAN
DVD Multi Recorder

I saw the invoice, and it was R10 050 from a supplier somewhere in Midrand. Pinnacle i think.

I think this is pretty good specs?

Ooh, not bad. Guess I haven't been shopping around enough. Wheres the best place to buy laptops from?

I suck with the laptop specs :(

No complaints on it though. It runs CS3 very nicely.

All good ;)

Dont get me wrong, they may be average specs but its still a power machine...I have the X61s and love it.

Those specs are not bad, but i think you could probably get something a bit better for R10. Someone correct me if I am wrong..

If you looking for serious bang for your buck take a trip to Makro and look at the Fujitsu Siemens range, the price Vs. specs is very decent, and their quality and after sale service is also great. I also have a Fujitsu which has been going strong for 2 years now.

Oh, to be fair. The machine I posted is from a May pricelist, so it is pretty outdated. I'll check out the new pricelist once I'm back in SA.

Really need to get myself a laptop and I'm not willing to spend more than R10k on it.

Thanks for the tip. I'll go check out Makro when I'm back. After sale service is always very important for me.

For R10K you can get yourself something very decent!

This on special at Makro at the moment just to give you an idea:

* 2GB RAM
* 250GB SATA Hard Drive
* Dual layer DVD writer
* WLAN/LAN
* 15,4" Brilliant View Screen
* 3 year next business day on site warranty

Very decent IMHO (and you still get change from R10K) :D

Good luck ;)

Go for the Lenovo, Pinnacle are the distributors.

Yeah I saw that. Brilliant price! Too bad for the crappy graphics card though...

You mentioned you are not in SA at the moment, where are you? If you are in Europe or USA why not buy one there? Much cheaper.
