Hi

I'm thinking of buying a new Mecer Notebook from http://www.mecerpc.co.za. The specification I'm looking at is as follow:

Mecer Xpression TW7A Santa Rosa Core 2 Duo Notebook (Intel 965GM)
Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T7300 2.0Ghz
160GB SATA Hard Disk Drive
DVDRW DVD-RW Super Multi optical drive
2048MB DDR2-667 SO-Dimm Memory

The bare bone system includes:

15.4" WXGA (1280x800 resolution) TFT LCD Display
Embedded nVidia NB8M W/128MB PCI Express x16
Embedded 56K Voice Fax / Modem
Embedded 10/100/1000TX Gigabit Ethernet
Built-in 4-in-1 Card Reader (SD/MMC/MS/MS PRO)
Q802XKG Embedded 802.11b/g Wireless Lan
QBTM400 Built-in Bluetooth
Intel High Definiteion Audio (8-Channel)
Built-in Speakers & Microphone Jack
Built-in 1.3M Pixel Camera 4 x USB, 1 x 1394, 1 x Robson slot (Intel Turbo Memory)
1 x TV-Out

All this for about R 10 000.

Now what I want to know is can I buy something better for the same price and what/where?

If someone also have something against Mecer please let me know. I don't want to random "M3c3r Suxor post" but if you have a valid reason to hate mecer or proof that mecer notebooks is junk please tell.

Oh and finally if someone knows where I can get a better price on the Mecer it would be appreciated.

Regards,

There've been a lot of moans and groans here about Mecer quality and customer service standards. Not had the pleasure to try one myself.
Mecer had a display recently at a local shopping centre. I couldn't believe the fish-bowl shape monitor they had for sale. A museum piece!!

d-_-b.

From personal experience, Mecer treat their customers and dealers terribly. What you should rather look at, is a Manufacturer that offers good after sales support. Personally, I prefer Acer or HP, as they offer great support ie, like a collect and deliver service for in-warrentee items. They also provide a longer warrentee than Mecer do.

Agree. I have an Acer laptop and although it gave me hassles in the beginning, Acer support quickly sorted it out, no questions asked. As for Mecer, I must admit I've bought 2 PC's from them during the last few years and they didn't give me any hassles at all. They're still running fine, so I don't know what Mecer's support is like, since I never had to deal with them.

I had a client with a Mecer PC and I had endless problems with Mecer trying to get it fixed

definitely ****...

rather go with some other brand.

Thanks for all the replies so far.

The main concern seems that Mecer does not have good support. I think one can see that easily just by how outdated and useless their website are(http://www.mecer.co.za). I also did a quick search on http://www.hellopeter.com for Mecer and Mustek and only found 15 posts in total and only 4+- relevant posts for Mecer notebooks.

The big question now is how important support is for me. Yes, if the notebook breaks I would not want to wait 1 or 2 months for repairs or parts. But looking at the complaints on this forum and hellopeter its normally just isolated cases, but still I don't want to be an isolated case.

On the other hand is look at what I get for my money(excluding service). I doubt you will find any notebook close to that specification for R 10 000. If someone knows where I can get better notebook deals in the Pretoria area please post a link or private message me.

I'm really thinking of buying the Mecer, maybe only to log my complaint of bad support on HelloPeter and MyADSL but that is if the Mecer notebook goes dead on me.

Is Mecer a South African brand?
Yip Mecer is a SA brand. It's actually funny because somewhere I saw they said "Made in South Africa" but Mecer notebooks is actually just rebranded Quanta barebone notebooks.

Regards and please keep those comments coming... I want to make a informed decision or atleast have the illusions that I have made one.
