I called a guy with regards to getting something fixed on a Renault Clio, then he says he needs the VIN number to get the parts. I'm skeptical, is this standard practice? Whats the worst he could do with it?

Heard thieves were getting spare keys using peoples' VIN numbers a while back.

you do know you can read the VIN number off the license disc which has to by law be visible

Good lord...paranoid much?

The VIN tells him exactly what model car it is from exactly what year and even when it was manufactured and where.

It's the simplest fastest way for him to know what he is dealing with. So if you can't be arsed to take the car there and instead choose to do this kind of business over the phone then the very least you should have for him is the VIN.

Not all models of a car is the same.
You can get upto 4 different models in a range even if they were sold in the same year.
It's normal practice.

You will get zero response from our Parts Department if you don't give them your VIN.

It's the only way the parts people can be absolutely certain that they are dealing with the correct part.

Cars undergo constant "tweaks" and a part on a car built in February of one year, may be different to the "same" part built in May, due to some minor modification.

Remove the tinfoil hat and give him the VIN. :)

So you fell for the bollocks email that was doing the rounds! Absolute BS - spread by fear mongerers. You cannot simply get spare keys if you know a car's VIN - there's a whole process which includes certified copies of the car's Log Book just to start with!

Not only is it displayed on the license disk, it's also displayed on the dashboard or windscreen of just about every car I've seen...

^^This. If anyone knew how many changes occur monthly in the production line. (And how many vehicles leave the floor with defects  )

Yup -it's the only way we can identify new cars when they arrive on the carriers.
