Looking at taking a mechanical breakdown warranty on my car in the next few months as it runs out of Motorplan.
So far it seems Motorite is the most popular, as well as Innovation.
Anyone have any legitimate bad experiences with these guys.

Look into hollard motorxtender. I have had it on my wife's car for over 5 years now and am quite satisfied

How many claims have you made and how successful were they.

The true test of insurance is not the premium or friendliness of the agent but when it comes time to claim.

Two sets of cv joints, couple of wheel bearings, ummm
I'll have to look up the rest
Never had a claim declined...

Ok so minor stuff. Any major engine repairs?

Did the cost of the repairs done so far exceed the premium paid?

I'll have to look it up for you tomorrow. I honestly can't recall.

I expect I've paid more over the 5 years than they have, but that is the nature of insurance. I prefer the known monthly premium for the peace of mind that unexpected costs won't hit as hard.

Also have a Hollard MotorExtender policy for my car since Nov 2015 as well.

In July, when my car went in for its annual / 105,000 km service, there were 3 mechanical issues found:

1. Coil pack & HT leads needed replacing (misfire when idling or accelerating).

2. Brake Booster Unit needed replacing (intermittent vacuum boost leak).

3. Water pump, metal coolant pipe & main radiator / heater / expansion tank coupling hose (plus coolant) needed replacing (coolant leak from pipe / hose & noise from water pump).

I claimed for all 3 items & Hollard paid out just under R 11,000 for all these parts, within 3 weeks of me submitting all the paperwork.

My policy is only R 300 a month, so I basically had all my instalments to date refunded with this claim.

So yes, very satisfied with Hollards extended mechanical warranty policy so far.

March this year - wheel bearing, R4k paid
October last year - CV joints, R4k paid
Can't find earlier records, but I've had a couple of wheelbearings, a couple of cv joints, and also a water leak done.

Were the costs paid in full, or did you also have to pay a part?

are their any limitations on what sort of car one can take these sort of plans out on?

IE if your car is 2016 year and newer you can opt for one of these plans,
or under 100000 KM, or a certain make and model? or services at agents only?

as I thinking to take one of these things out with my next car, especially if I going to buy used, and one not so sure.
if the car is that reliable ect...

Nope. MotorXtender used to halve the benefits when the car turned 10, but they've changed that now.

Just call them and ask...

Your car will fall into a category with different limits depending on when you sign up( what mileage and year model ), you get the better benefits when your car is still under a Motorplan and less than 5 yrs and has a full service history.

I was quoted lumpsum of R15k for 24 mths

That’s about the going rate. I paid R13k for 2 years on a 2013 A3 earlier this year - this was with Motorite.

Only complaint was that changing the warranty over to the new owner of the car in September took 2 months. Never had to claim.

I had AMP Warranties on a previous car. Moving that from the previous owner to my name took about 2 weeks. A motor-related claim took about a month to finalise and they paid out 22k for that.

Thanks for the response. And how was the claiming process with Motorite? Did you ever experience problems ?
