Mede8tor firmware please help

Hmm... are you going to try and install the Mede8er f/w onto the PlayonHD?

I would love to do this, but the guys at Mede8er have locked their firmware to their own devices (with good reason I think) so it won't install on any of the other realtek devices.

Mvix was around long before the laMede8er...local distributor Sanji brought out the Mede8er as an exculsive brand and actually a knock-off of the Mvix....

Ja, I have owned two MviX devices long before I ever bought a Mede8er... but since MviX support and firmware updates have dropped to zero... I switched to the Mede8er. Of course being able to play Hi-def content is also a huge plus for the Mede8er! ;)
 
MVix Ultio Pro - HD,PVR and Bittorent client all in one device.....

No a friend has one and I was asked to download it for him
Isnt the chip the same? the internals look exactly the same

Yes its basically the same device with different firmware. The firmware makes a big difference tho. You can actually install f/w from other realtek devices onto the PlayonHD and vise-versa.
The PlayonHD's f/w is also open source, so if you had the know how you could change it as you please.
The Mede8er firmware is sleeker, much nicer to use and has more functionality. The one that annoys me the most on the playonhd is the skip function, or lack thereof. On the Mede8er if you press a number during playback, say 15, it will skip to minute 15 of the file.
However, sharing the playonhd on the network was simple (just enabled it and it was there) where I have still not actually gotten the NAS function of the Mede8er to work properly. Overall I prefer the Mede8er.

Mvix was crap! Mede8er plays everything.
 
So are you saying I can install my latest Mede8er firmware on my friend's PlayOnHD as well with no hassles?

There are a few reasons. First is the search function I mentioned. Second is the ui of the Mede8er. Its so much nicer than the playonHD's.
Another reason I think is how involved the guys at Mede8er are on the forums and in the Mede8er community in general.

At the end of the day tho I'm not unhappy with the playonHD, its just not as friendly to me as the Mede8er. I honestly could not even say one is better than the other, only that I prefer the Mede8er.

Nope. I'm saying you can't. You can put the Fantec Firmware onto it, and you could probably put the PlayonHD's firmware onto the Mede8er, but the guys at Mede8er have made it so that their firmware will only install on their own devices.

Edit:

Installing other f/w on your Mede8er is also not a good idea, it might mess up some encryption key or something. Then you wouldn't be able to put the Mede8er f/w back on it.
