Hi guys,

First, Merry Christmas to all!

I need some advice. I'm looking for a media box that has XMBC pre-installed. I don't want a HTPC.

There are a couple of these boxes out there, but I'm not sure which are the good ones, and which ones I should avoid. I want a nice smooth experience, so I guess a quadcore CPU is a must.

I absolutely need this box to support Dolby True HD/DTS Master HD pass-thru. And can I install XBMC skins on these media boxes?

If anyone has one of these media players, please offer your comments and advice. Thanks, and again, Merry Christmas.

I have one of these:

http://www.bidorbuy.co.za/item/1699..._AMLogic_M8_ARM_CORTEX_A9_2GHz_Quad_Core.html

It came with an "outdated" firmware version from about July this year. It absolutely needs updating to the latest firmware, which is a bit of a mission since you need to do it manually with a microSD card (no exceptions) and I had to ask on the forums for the correct order of firmware installs, but once it was done it runs now like a beauty.

Man does that little thing pump. 4k content no problem, nice and responsive little unit (when updated). I highly recommend buying a separate bluetooth gyro remote for it though.

Edit: It does all the XBMC things and works with skins etc.

Does this box support pass-thru Dolby True HD and DTS Master?

The audio codec? It should, that is basic. Give me a test file and I'll tell you.

EDIT: Yes it does in fact support both, I just tested it. You have to make sure the receiver is compatible though :)

MXIII - got them via AVSupply, but they don't sell them anymore until they get ICASA wifi device certification or something.

Dunno if you can get them from somewhere else, but they rock. XBMC pre-installed. Aeon skin pre-installed. sickbeard pre-installed. Quad Core. 4K Video support. included HDMI cable.
Small like an Apple TV. rooted. wifi (no weird aerial). 2 x USB ports + mini USB. Optical Audio. Fast. Great support thread. +- R1200.

A colleague of mine bought a media box (Android operating system) with XBMC pre-installed, and it cost him around R1200. Quad-core CPU as well. He's raving about his, but I forgot the name of the unit.

Aeon skin pre-installed? That's amazing. His unit just has the default basic skin.

What is the brand of that machine? You say MXIII?

Thanks for the confirmation!

Yep, MX III - it's android based & super compact.

Okay, so I can't buy it. :(

If you guys know where I can source one of those units, please don't be shy, tell me about it! :D Or if there are other XMBC pre-installed boxes around locally, it would be great if I could go and buy one.

I don't feel like ordering from Amazon, even though they have a very wide selection of XBMC-installed media boxes.

Get the MXQ from avsupply. The difference with them is the aftersales support you get. These devices require a wee bit of tweaking and customsing to get it to work right. The droidtv's come pre-installed with all the add-ons and apps you require. So you can plug and play from the get go, and tweak as you get more familiar with the device.

he can't sell them for the time being, he's waiting for ICASA approval because it needs wifi certification.

But yes, great after sales support!

Do these also support Netflix? Tired of my smart tv's crap firmware and audio issues.
