Media Centre on Windows7

Hey all
I need to setup Media Centre on Windows 7 with only a crossover cable and USB Iburst modem.What would be the best method since i am not using a router or switch.
I dont need to setup the IBurst modem.Ideally i just want the Media Centre to browse content from my notebook to play movies,view pics.I dont need to go to the internet or stream TV.
