Media Centres - where to start?

the media player has network and upnp capabilities.
 
I've also been looking at the Z-Wave products which seem quite interesting. It creates a wireless mesh network to control all of your electronics and doesn't have to be centrally controlled, although that is one benefit to automation. http://zasmarthomes.com stock their products but they appear to be more expensive than X10-sa.co.za

Some of the Z-Wave products look really good though - like the multi-sensor and whole home energy monitor...
 
Darnit you guys are not making this easy :p

It seems like it really matters what you want to get out of it. I think I need to sit down and figure exactly what it is I want out of this server.

Too true. Who wants a "Server" box sitting with all your AV stuff. Microserver is better as a NAS device with something like the WD as a front end. Except I have this one. :D
