Good Day

I saw a similar post to this but thought I should create a new one instead of hijacking that one. I have a dilemna in which I don't know what is the best solution for my current problem. I have a mac, an old early 2011 13inch one, an external drive that has all my media and there is a flatscreen with only 1 HDMI port in the house. The port is used for DSTV but I'm sure that can be changed. My Mac does not have an HDMI port, only a Mini DisplayPort. I figure the cheapest route is getting a MiniDP to HDMI cable which is the easiest fastest way to connect Mac to TV and stream content.

However I want to do this wirelessly. Reason being I recently came across Kodi which I have running on my Mac and it has been a joy to "stream" online content via WiFi. I now want to stream same content to TV from Mac. Basically stream/cast Kodi onto the TV.

Apple TV seems best but I'm reading 3rd Gen can't get Kodi on it which is the most popular version out there and the 4th Gen Apple TV is pricey. 2nd Gen outdated. Chromecast is great so I've heard but with that I'm limited to just casting. Can't have Kodi on it as such also iOS support seems non existant. Raspberry Pi could work. But that seems abit technical and chances are the end price including casing etc might equal that of the Apple TV. Have heard there are several boxes out there like MiBox by Xiaomi but those solve Kodi playing on TV issue but not the casting of anything else from Mac wirelessly issue.

What would be the best way forward regarding finding a solution to play my content on TV. main thing being Kodi and my media on external drive?

I've tested a small "no name brand" device from Gatget Time, cost R600, support DLNA and AirPlay, so you can stream from any phone or tablet that support streaming, it work from a MacBook 12 and a Dell Latitude with miracast

You have many options. You can get one of the Chinese devices mentioned above such as Mirascreen, Wecast, Allcast, EzCast from Aliexpress for around $8 if you use the $2 off coupon when making a first time purchase from the app (either android or iOS).

Alternatively you should be able to load an Airplay receiver app on a Xiaomi Mi Box (~$65 using $5 off coupon from app) or any of the cheap Chinese android TV boxes.

You may need to refer to this guide to configure Kodi to work with the DLNA/Airplay receiver mentioned above.
