I notice a lot of forumites talking about having a media player server at home. My question is just, where do you get legal content for this, and what does it cost?

You can open yourself an US iTunes account, this is about as "legal" as you are going to get - only problem is that the media files are DRM protected (you can get utilities to remove this however), so you will have to play it on Apple hardware.

I assume your question refers to video content, if so the above is about the only place where you can get good quality legal downloads if you are in South Africa. Music is pretty easy to get legally anywhere.

You can get iTunes vouchers here: http://www.itunesvouchers.co.za, and them use them to open up a US account. I think there are some tutorials on the site itself how to go about this.

If you not too worried about "legal" downloads, then news servers are the way to go - there is also plenty of info here on the forum.
