I'm currently using Serviio to stream movies/series from my Laptop to my TV. I don't have a Smart TV and the Sony Bravia's are limited with their multimedia functionality. It won't play .MKV files from a external drive at all.

The problem I have with Serviio is that I often get errors saying that the network connection is lost. And when I have a movie with a different language (which I can change on the computer) I'm unable to change it on the TV.

So now I'm thinking about getting a dedicated Media Player. I was thinking of getting a Android TV or Apple TV. I think the Android TV will be more user friendly and have better functionality that a Apple TV.

What is your thoughts on this?

PS. I also have a spare Desktop PC but it doesn't have a HDMI output. I have a DVI to HDMI converter but then I only get video, and no audio.

I'm very partial to Roku devices just because they tend to be really reliable and don't often have issues plus you have plenty of channel support.

Though I am looking to move to Nvidia Shield TV (Android TV), just because I want the extra functionality.

If I had purchased content from iTunes I would probably be forced to go Apple TV, but I don't so not a worry.

But I intend for my final media set up to be like this:

HP Microserver running FreeNAS for mass storage.
Nvidia Shield TV running Plex Media Server.

It's a very power efficient and small footprint solution, which I've been after.
