Hi guys.

I'm looking to sign up for medical aid.

I'd like to have doctor visits, emergencies and a hospital plan cover.

I went to two online quote sites this week Monday and only received 2 quotes. These sites are similar to hippo.co.za.

Is it my age? Turning 25. I doubt it's my income, since I know of people who earn less than me and they also have medical.

These companies just don't care about signing new clients it seems.

Could you recommend somewhere I could ask for a quote?

I'm ideally looking to pay below R1000 per month, R500 would be good, but I understand that not many options are available on the budget packages.

Also, I was injured 2 weeks ago (almost two weeks, will be Saturday). I am correct in understanding the law, that no matter my injury or health state, a medical aid can't refuse me admission?

Thanks,
tera

lol, what the heck? :p

Wouldn't it be better to go through a financial planner?

Health & Gripes, they're too close together :p

I don't know to be honest. I guess so. I just don't have the time to see one.

Can tell you this much: avoid Discovery like the plague.

Which ones did you get quotes from?

Resolution Health only, but they haven't answered my reply I sent on Monday already, their quote came through straight away.

The other one just confirmed my details, Optivest Health. Never replied.

Of course any insurance company (health included) can deny your membership. Remember, they are doing you a favor by accepting you and not the other way around. Some oversee private companies will insure you for very cheap but their acceptance criteria is very/extremelly strict. I personaly like the idea. After all, why must I as a non smoker pay for your lung cancer treatment which will result in dead anyway? Or as a non drinker, pay for Misimang's liver transplant? :D

You forgot about the HIV/AIDS part. There is a huge glitch in medical aids (excuse the pun :p) if you are infected.
I can't help you with details for medical aid but do know that if I were on my own at our medical aid it would be R800pm-ish.

I think they are supposed to come and see you.

... and I have been very happy with Discovery. :)

We're with Keyhealth. My wife is on a plan for R800, which includes a new thing called Health Booster that offers some benefits. Their customer service is awful though.

I was on Discovery on 2 occassions, but finally changed to MediHelp. No problems so far. Paying about R1200 though - single member!

That's because your inquiry probably goes to some call center inbox where no-ones really cares if they respond or not because they are just on the clock. Call them and ask to speak to a sales person. Sales people are paid when they sell stuff so tend to be more responsive.

Have a look at Oxygen from Old Mutual too.

maybe have a look at plans from fedhealth, the maxima options can suite you...

...otherwise, i've seen medihelp has good prices, unsure of what they cover though

Depends on the nature of the injury. Medical aids take a dim view of people who runs to sign up for cover once they know they will have certain medical expenses. That is why full disclosure and a medical exam is required before membership is granted.

If they know that you have a particular medical problem, they often impose an exclusion, meaning you cannot claim for any treatment relating to that particular medical issue for a certain period of time.
