I never had Medicaid aid before, I'm now in a perm position and this is my first job that offers medical aid benefits. Now I chose my own medical aid plan instead of the company, I don't want to pay more than R500 a month FFS, what options are out there?

Out of luck buddy.
You may be able to scrape a hospital plan for R800. I doubt you get get even basic medical aid for under R1k

If the work pays rather get something decent in the 2k range.

I don't want to pay more than R50k for a Ferrari either, but unfortunately it doesn't work like that.

I looked into all the options when I started this thread, you won't really find decent cover under 800. Even the options that are 1k have got T & Cs and limits for some procedures ect.

As an update, I did eventually get my plan lowered. Had to fight and threaten though but came right. Persistance paid off.

I wonder, can I decline medical aid? I don't want to sound like a cheapskate to my manager. If I decline I just wont receive the benefit correct? 1K a month is overkill for me.

Usually its part of corporate policy that you have some medical aid, typically discovery plan of some sort with a minimum value needed for the tax exemption.

As was said, yes. It's usually a requirement, and I think a good one. Most employers do pay a portion though, even if it's worked into the TCOE.

My work used to pay half before we went TCOE.

Although this may seem like a good idea now; it increases your taxable income and you get ****ed. Best get ****ed by Discovery than let Jacob violate you without vaseline.

I hate Discovery. But I hate Jacob more so Coastal Saver it is.

I have always been very healthy and have never had any medical conditions myself and or any in the family.

Because of this I have only had good medical insurance for the past 15 odd years which has saved me a very large amount when compared to medical aid for the same period. NOTE: I was fully covered for 99% of hospital related stuff with gap cover etc.. so nothing reckless like going without cover.

In the past 15 years I have been to a doctor three times and to a dentist about twice (last time was two months ago, he just checked and cleaned, nothing wrong) so the medical insurance was the right thing for me and as said, it saved me a fortune.

Since hitting 40 I switched to a more comprehensive medical aid to cover more of the basics. Still do not need them (hope I never do) but I'm changing my cover according to my possible needs from here on in.

So what I'm trying to say is that people should not just look at price but rather at what they actually need. Many go out and get the best they can afford because its the right thing do while others try and save when its the wrong thing to do.

Get your situation properly assessed and make an informed decision from that assessment. Don't just go with the advice others give you, you may just end up paying with your life.

Well I never get sick.

Except for last month where I got a bleeding ulcer.

Medical aid ended up paying R80k once all was said and done.

Well worth it if you ask me.
