Hey guys,

Got a review coming up later today, Was thinking about asking the company for medical benefits.

Ive been looking for a decent medical plan cos im going to need surgery in a couple months or in as little time as they will allow.

Has anybody had experience with Bonitas? I like the price of the Bonsave option and im sure I could convince the company to get me a package of a similar price at around R1300~

Any help will be appreciated

from what I hear (from doctors and members) is that gems is the most efficient medical aid currently, try them.

Seriously doubt any plan will cover a pre-existing condition

I'm on Bonsave and if you don't have a lot of day to day expenses then it a very nice Medical aid option. I carried over R600 rand from last year on the savings and they pay 150 percent of normal rates when in hospital.

from Bonitas application Form:
a 12 (twelve) month exclusion in respect of a pre-existing condition;

but isn't that only for government employees? I used to be a member, but when I resigned to go into the private sector they cancelled my membership

If i recall, if you not currently on medical aid, and sign up for medical aid, there is usually some sort of waiting period - during which certain procedures will not be paid out - an operation will definitely not be paid out.

You're correct, mr v took a quick thumb suck.

Yeh pretty sure:
GEMS = Government Employee Medical Scheme

What's the surgery ? Be very careful, review policies and see who will cover something like that so soon.

Medical aids are simple things.

Find the company logo that you like the best, give them your money.

If you live near the coast Discovery Coastal option is a no-brainer, when I moved I started paying R100 less and got double the in hospital cover and savings. Not sure if other schemes have the same thing.

Please remember they call them medical "SCHEMES". Think pyramid "SCHEMES", they are all out to rob you any ways.

correct, im not on any medical aid currently. I know they will probably not cover it for a good year and thats why im hoping eventually they will.

I got a pilonidal cyst that is pretty damn frustrating and its getting worse so im trying to get onto medical aid and hope they will cover it after a year or so.. ive only been to a doc about it, not to a specialist, the doc said ill probably need surgery but ill need to go to a specialist. Not sure if I would need to include it on the application? There are several types of surgeries available for this but im just willign to try any to get rid of the thing.

I dont have many day to day sicknesses, possible a flu here and there in the year but generally healthy except the recent pilonidal which is poisoning my body quite badly.

I also just want mainly some sort of hospital cover, riding a scooter on the road I dont want to land up in a serious accident and need to go to a government hospital, A jaywalker knocked me down last year and i hurt my arm, thought it was broken and went to a government hospital and cant say i was impressed at all, would never want to have a surgery there.

Im going to push my directors to pay for the full bonsave medical aid as I am quite skilled in what i do and quite an important factor to the team and im sure they will pay the full thing if my review goes well.

Would anybody recommend any other companies for a similar type package/price?

Take a look at Bestmed Beat 2. It seems to be better than Bonsave even though Bonsave is 150% and Beat2 100%. I would get a gap cover for about R100 which will cover up to 300% and still save R200 a month. Also the oncology benefits and Co-payment for specific in-hospital procedures on the Bonsave are not so kief....

I use this tool to compare schemes: http://www.msit.org.za (click on the compare schemes button)

hmm yea thanks using the tool now, checked the difference between the 2, comparing them they really are prett close to each other, I see the bestmed still has some co payments although a R1000 co payment is not bad at all.

for R300 less i might just look at this one and the directors will probably be more willing to pay that one in full.

I like the fact they cover 150% in hospital, i think hospital costs are my biggest worry now. 12 months exclusion is really not too bad, I might struggle for a year but hey atleast i know in a year it should hopefully be gone :D

thanks for the help, Glad to hear its a pretty decent medical aid, Ive heard so many horrors about medical aids i really want to pick one that will atleast be ok

Once again - do you currently have medical aid?
Even if you do, you may find that changing isn't as easy as you would hope

Speaking of GAP covers, I heard a couple of months ago that government is proposing GAP to be gotten rid of.

Yes, but Im not sure its going to be quick or easy. For now its very worthwhile. What I was trying to explain to the OP is I would rather have medical cover from a scheme for 100% with GAP cover taking care of up to 300% than just cover for 150%.

I was on Bonitas when I was in SA. Very good medical aid.

Also look at who the administrators are. While costs are important, getting your claims processes with as little hassle as possible is always a plus.
