We're currently with Medway Gap cover but haven't needed to claim yet.

I'm actually looking around at others like:
Optivest
Stratum.

Have any of you had experiences with any of these?

We're on GEMS Emerald medical aid

There is Sirago which I use. Never had to claim before but my parents did and there weren't any issues as far as I'm aware.

Sirago seem very good.. I haven't claimed yet either but I hear good things. And their premiums are very good for what you get..

There's also Zestlife (which allows already diagnosed people to still join under certain circumstances) and Turnberry (which I've heard some positive things about)

Been with Stratum since I think 2010. They have paid every single claim I have put in, not one issue. I have claimed about 8 times so far. I would say this has been one of the best things I have ever bought. You do have a 12 month waiting period - well my family did. In my opinion well worth it.

Got an email from Zestlife announcing a 28% (R329 to R424) premium increase for 2017 on their comprehensive policy option. How the hell do they justify that?

Had the same with Stratum's comprehensive cover, an increase of 30% (R245 to R320) this year I asked how they can justify that they said that comprehensive has been totally phased out so they moved comprehensive to the "Elite" cover option but I could downgrade if I liked.

Haven't had to claim from it before.

Yeah same thing here and I'm also asking myself if I should downgrade since I haven't ever used it since getting it.

Typical, just like a tyre repair kit. YOu'll never have a puncture once you have it...but dare leave it at home one day and poof.

just a quick question, do GAP covers only cover hospital related claims?

Some have extended benefits related to the emergency room and cancer cover etc, but primarily yes it's for in hospital stuff only.

I am having an increase with Amberdown (previously Complimed) from R180 to R260 per month per family (The singles like me always seem to end up subsidising families). The background there is that they were selected by my former employer (I'm recently retired) and when they reached a certain number of employees they were prepared to waive the underwriting. The result is that their claims for us were almost 80% above the income from our monthly payments. In spite of that I wouldn't consider ditching it at age 60. Even though I've been extremely fortunate in terms of medical expenses, even with a couple of PMB chronic conditions, at my age I would stick with it, although from 2018 when legislation regarding Gap Cover changes I would have to reconsider medical aid options so will be trying Discovery Classic Smart Plan this year since it covers up to 200%.

Depends on what level of cover you choose. There are generally several options. The most basic tends to cover you for up to 500% for hospitalisation.

Other options, which are still worthwhile considering the cost are:

Cancer cover, usually R50,000 - most non-Comprehensive medical aid options cover for about R200,000 per 12 month period with a co-payment of 20% of costs above that. That R50,000 is the 20% of another R250,000 of cancer treatment.

Co-payments - these can be covered for things like scopes and MRI scans even when done out of hospital. NB: This does not cover co-payments where you are on a network option on your medical aid and you voluntarily choose to go to hospital which is not on your network.

Emergency situation - very often people go to a casualty unit in case of emergencies, however, unless you are hospitalised subsequent to that the medical aid doesn't cover the cost of X-rays, medication, stitching of major cuts, scans, etc unless you have a medical savings account, ie it's like a normal doctor's visit, just usually after hours. Some Gap Covers offer you about R7,500 to cover such emergencies.

It's important to look at what exactly you want covered, not just the cheapest price.

In terms of the total covered this is currently R1,000,000 plus, however from 2018 onwards for those already on Gap Cover and from April next year for new joiners, this will be limited to a total of R150,000.

Zestlife now seems to cover non network co-payments
1. Non-DSP Co-payment Cover: Up to R8 000 each
year for each policy (one claim per year) is
provided to cover the co-payment when using
a hospital outside of the medical aid’s approved
(DSP) network.[/I]

Mine costs R205 per month. When I started on it 8 years ago I recall it was just over R100 but it is via work so I think we get a big bulk discount.

Currently it is via African Unity health but that changed last year from Guardrisk I think. I have claimed twice and both times was very much like an insurance claim. No issues getting payout. It also seems well worth it as doc fees in private hospitals can be a lot hiher than the medical aid is willing to pay. I think the birth of my kids alone covered several years worth of my premium.
