CAPE TOWN - The Correctional Services Department on Friday said only 12 inmates were released on medical parole during the first six months of 2012.

It is believed no other prisoners were released for medical reasons for the rest of the year.

Medical parole has become a thorny issue for the ministry following the release of disgraced former national police chief Jackie Selebi and Schabir Shaik.

Selebi was released on parole in 2012 on medical grounds after serving just two years of his 15-year jail term.

The criteria for medical parole were called into question in 2010 when Shaik was also freed under dubious circumstances.

The South African Prisoners Organisation for Human Rights Golden Miles Bhudu said the process is flawed.

“It remains a fact that you need to be connected in high places to in fact get preferential treatment.”

Shaik was once President Jacob Zuma’s financial adviser.

He was convicted of fraud in 2005 and sentenced to 15 years in prison.

However, he was released on medical parole in 2009.

The bastards are both still alive and well...

And in other news... diving into a lake could make you wet.

Nothing flawed about medical parole as a concept .. it's the corrupt arseholes at the top & people bowing to political presssure from them that's flawed.

I never realised that Selebi served two years of his 15-year jail term??? It just felt like yesterday that he was found guilty and immediately after having been found guilty, he fell ill.

It might seem redundant to post this but we shouldn't allow ourselves to forget the flagrant abuse of power shown by the ANC to senior ANC officials guilty of serious fraud and corruption.

The president can setup whatever committees at whatever further cost to the taxman he likes, but he will forever be infamously renowned as being the most corrupt and morally bankrupt president this country has ever had the misfortune of playing host to. Committees mean nothing when your actions are corrupt...

He spent a matter of a few days in prison. The rest of the time he spent in a private hospital where his majesty was treated like a 5-star hotel guest...

Joke - he was not in prison as in cell 4 walls and a door.
