Pretoria - The Medupi power station has been declared a National Key Point, Eskom said on Thursday.

The power parastatal held an inauguration ceremony to declare the Limpopo-based power station as a National Key Point.

“The Medupi Power Station is of strategic and national importance due to its generating capacity of 4 764 MW once completed. It will be the largest dry cooled power station in the world consisting of six super critical boilers and 6 turbine generator units with air cooled condensers,” said the utility.

The station is also critical to Eskom’s responsibility towards South Africa’s economic growth, job creation and socio economic development of Lephalale.

“Due to its critical importance to the national grid in providing sustainability of electricity supply and limiting load shedding, it is imperative for the safety and security of the asset that it be declared a National Key Point as defined by the National Key Points Act.”

Meanwhile, Eskom said it is progressing well when coming to the maintenance of its power generating plants while keeping the electricity system stable.

“As a result, no load shedding is anticipated today,” it said. – SAnews.gov.za

Call me a cynic, but I'll bet the underlying reason is to avoid any investigations into corruption in deals made around it.

Next thing they will want to sink a firepool and build a safety chicken hokkie as well as an assembly amphitheater at Medupi ....

Pretty sure Majuba is already marked as one. Doesn't seem unusual to me per se.

I'm sure gov will try to leverage it to bury stuff anyway though.

This 'project' will never be completed. We'll have old men who started working on it straight out of school retiring after completing a life time of service to its construction.
