Nearly 2 years late and millions over budget, we discover today that government are now giving over 20 billion in funding to Eskom this coming year. So where does that leave us? More taxes, less electricity and less productivity to contribute to the GDP - downward spiral.

If ESKOM could collect the billions owed by non-paying municipalities and consumers, they would not need the bailout by the taxpayer.

cANCer will not allow this as most non-payers are votahs for the ruling party.

Then they'd have about R6bn from Soweto and then possibly R1-2bn from others so they'll still be about R15bn short of the injection needed.

So no, sorry... the shortfall has hardly anything to do with non-payment by municipalities and has much more to do with producing electricity at R4/kWh and selling it for R0.10c to BHP Billiton.

I actually feel sorry for eskom in a way. It is difficult to produce electricity timely, cheaply, and with the meddling goverment and labour forces.

If you look at the cost per megawatt as originally planned vs actual today, the Medupi overrun is close to R80b. Doesn't include lost revenues from being >4 years late.

How else to justify the increases to Nersa and to feed the hungry Execs at Eskom.The losses by Eskom regarding Medupi should be recovered from the contractors.The taxpayers and consumers are paying for the stations and they are still expected to pay market related pricing for power?

The contractors were at fault in many respects, but as I understand it many of the problems can be laid at Eskom's door.

The sooner private power companies can contribute to the grid the better, but as usual mr zuma, Nope, We want to hold the monopoly.

Well, The good news is that telkom will be privatized soon.
