MeerKAT - SA can be proud

so if these geniuses were running SAA or eskom, we would have the next Emirates or Enron?
or if they decided to actually do their jobs instead of buying Black BMW's

we would have infrastructure and services to rival Sweden or Norway.

No, they'd be baking bread on the shores of Taiwan....

Why would you want us to have the next Enron?

We are all so accustomed to bad news on this forum and in this country that when some good news does come around we don't know what the hell to do with it. Think we all need to get our heads on straight.

Some yes...

Personally I think MeerKAT and SKA are great achievements, and they have also done wonders for the HPC setups at the various universities in SA.

There are existing threads on Meerkat going back as far as 2010-11:

Also reported in 2016:

And 2018:

And its part of the SKA, with earlier reports as well:

No, but I'm telling you that the ANC had a hand in this, and it is largely a success.... nothing more or less. Not everything they are vaguely involved in turns to shyte you know.
No, the ANC did not do anything. The only reason South Africa was (also) chosen was because of the favourable location. Actually South Africa is behind schedule. Thanks to the ANC, South Africa is still transmitting in lower band frequencies which will have a negative impact on the overall sensitivity. That has been mitigated somewhat by placing the more affected antennas in Australia. The world did not trust South Africa to begin with. Furthermore, because of the ANC and mismanagement, the entire project is ways beyond schedule. So much so that a key partner (Germany) decided to withdraw altogether. Keep in mind, the money comes from outside. The expertise too. South Africa only has to provide the location and general workers. And even there South Africa missed the boat....

Our heads are fine, it what's been going on around us that hasn't been..

Some interesting research:
It is not well known but input from @rietrot laid the foundation for this project. His experiments on 6000 year old earth theory proved very useful.
“Light left those galaxies roughly when the earth started to form,” explains Dr Jacinta Delhaize, a research fellow at the University of Cape Town and lead author of the work.

The reason these monster galaxies were only noticed now has to do with their distance from earth – and the technologically advanced MeerKAT radio telescope that has been quietly scanning the skies from deep inside the Northern Cape.

The galaxies are 3.8 billion light years from Earth.

I'm not sure if you're being sarcastic or not, also prolly not up to date but please exprain the rietrot thing.

mustafa & I go long way back - we have yemeni friends in common. :p :p In his belief system, earth is only 6000 years old, world created in 6 days, snake talked and all those good things. I always pin him whenever earth age comes up.

Ah so you were sarcastic, thx for clearing that up.
And mustafa, no. Just no.

Curiosity, how many of you know about this place?

cyclotron at some nrf facility

Yip. Separated Sector Cyclotron. I think the third or fourth most energetic non super-conducting cyclotron in the world. Completely developed in SA. Still the only machine in southern hemisphere to have offered proton therapy and the first in the world to offer automated patient positioning and gated therapy. But barely a peep is ever heard of it.
