Hi there,

I've setup my new (free) Telkom Mega 100WR modem, and I'm accessing it mostly via WIFI. The only problem is that the range seems to be very short. After 5 meters or so the signal strength drops to Very Low, and is lost intermittently.

Any Advice?
* Is everyone else getting the same sort of range?
* Is there a way to increase this ... short of spending on a new modem ofcourse...?

Or is it a matter of you get what you pay for?

Hmm I hope this isn't the case. My current Netgear router manages right across my house but its about 10m or more..

I could use both of them together anyway.. but it seems like a waste using two routers.

I also have a Mega 100WR. Actually it's my second one, since the first one made a horrible power supply noise so i took it back. The range in our apartment is fine and signal strength is good in other rooms. Check that the aerial is screwed in properly and try some other laptops or computers with wireless to see if it is a general problem. These routers are not good quality so if you still have problems i would suggest you take the router back and swop it for a new one. Good luck.

Mine has a terrible range as well. I'm 5m away and get a very low signal.

Wifi keeps dropping

Hi, I have a wonderful Mega 100WR (closer) router from telkom that I have connected to a USB Wifi connection on my PC. This is a SENAO 362EXT. My signal strength is excellent as I have also put a 9Dbi antenna on my Router.

My only problem is that the WIFI connection drops intermittently, sometimes after a minute and other times after 10 minutes. The symptoms are strange though as it looks like my Internet drops and the wifi states that it is still connected and then it drops. Looks like a time out.

Any help will be appreciated as this is becoming quite a pain.

Go exchange the modem for the Marconi one - I think it's a bit better

My bad... I have the Premium Combo (doesn't say anything about Mega 100WR) and it works great so far.

Think I found my problem. Took wifi antenna out of rear USB 2.0 port and put into front USB 1.0 port and it only dropped after about 4 hours. don't think the USB 1 / 2 is the problem as my Wifi antenna is USB 2 compliant. I suspect that there must be some form of interference at back causing the drop. Any ideas where can I get one of them gadgets that you wrap your USB cable through to reduce inteference?

Blinking light or not?

I got the 100WR modem free on the self-install option. (I am still trying to get Telkom to activate my adsl line though.) I have plugged in everything as I should have, but my the modem's DSL light only flashes briefly when I switch the modem on and then stays off. Should the light not be flashing as it tries to sunc the adsl (which is not there yet?)

The thing also makes a whirring noise when switched on, especially when the wireless light comes on, about 10 or so seconds after initial switch on?

Do i have a dudd here?

sounds shaky... No idea what's making the noise though. Is your line activated at all? ie do you have voice access on it at present?

Should the light be blinking or not?

Yip, line is activated, have had voice access for more than 4 years now...

Hi Spidey,

If you plug the router in, and you do not have an active DSL line connected,
then the DSL light will not flash... it tries to do the sync in the background, and only turns on once sync is achived. I would not worry about that.

The Whirring noise .... well, that a different matter .. there are no mechanical parts inside the router that would be able to cause such a sound. This is the 3rd such case that I have heard of (out of quite a few thousand units) , and although the routers still work, it does concern me since somthing is clearly wrong. I would advise you to return that unit, and if you could help us out - please speak to the manager where you return it, and ask him to sent it on to the suppliers (that's us) for investigation. Ask him to make sure that it gets to our engineering department - he will know what to do.
This way, we can evaluate the causes, and hopefully prevent them from happening again .

Thanks

You definitely have a dudd! My first 100WR also made a high pitched whistling noise as soon as the power light goes green. I returned the unit and swopped it for a new one which is silent.

2C, you obviously have problem with the switching power supply in the unit or something of this nature. Hope you sort it out as the lady at the telkom shop said "they all make that noise" when i returned my first unit. Let us know if you figure it out.

yes, Gaz{M} you were one of the other 2 units that we have heard of. I do suspect that it may be an issue on the switchmode side of things, but that would normaly be discribed as a whistle, and not as a whirrr.. my logic goes like this : 1 unit faulty - ok , a part was faulty... 2 units faulty - perhaps 2 units had the same issue ... 3rd one faulty --- ummmm , noticing a trend here .... best investigate.

As a matter of intererest - could you let me know which shop you returned the unit to , and perhaps who you spoke to ? I have been through a fair number of units, and so far the fault count is 3 ... and all three are customer units, that i have not had back yet... if she told you that she has lots of them in a faulty condition, then I will definatly need to contact her.

Just as a matter of interest : while i am not up to date on the number of units shipped, 3 units represents somewhere around 1 millipercent - but we are serious about quality, so i would still like to make sure that this does not continue.

Thanks

Hi - it's great to see suppliers taking a personal interest in consumer's problems. The whistle was distinctly high frequency, the type of sound you get from switchmode power supplies, but a whirring noise could just be someone else's interpretation of the sound? Like you say there is nothing mechanical, so it must be a coil or transformer vibrating or something like that.

I returned my unit to the Telkom Direct shop in Telkom Towers North, Vermeulen Street, Pretoria about 2 weeks ago. Speak to Carina there, sorry i don't have the number. Her comment about them all making noise didn't imply that many had been returned, simply that it might be a common complaint? I just can't sleep with a whistling router like maybe others can. :)

Hope you sort it out.

Agree with Gaz, it's good to see some supplier representation on the forums

Thanks for the Info Gaz .. we are following up on it right away. I dont like to Pre-judge a problem .. it gets in the way of efficient faultfinding - somtimes you go chasing the wrong thing if you pre-judge ... however, you are thinking exactly what I am thinking.. there is little else that it could be - core vibration, or winding vibrations... I would find it a strech to call a whistle a whirrr, but it is possible, and the most likely possibility..

again, thanks

Hey, 2C Telecoms - so what sort of range can one expect on the Mega 100WR? I need about 10m range through 2 outside single storey walls.
Don't want to buy wi-fi cards if I should be buying ethernet cables!
