Mega 100WR Wireless range

Will return modem

Hi 2C,

thanks for the response. I will return the modem to Telkom Direct in Centurion Mall. I will also attach a printout of your request to have it sent to your eng dept.

I must also thank you for the prompt response I got from your help desk this morning regarding the same issue.

As far as the noise it makes, yes, my mechanical inclination might have caused me to hear a whirr where others might hear a whistle! Fact is, the noise changes in frequency once the wireless light comes on. (don't know if that helps you at this stage?)

Anyway, thanks for your assistance. Now I just wish I could get the same joy from my ADSL line activation...

Cheers

Activate Wireless

Hi. I started using ADSL about a week ago, so I'm pretty daft about some of it all. I also have the Mega 100WR. Where do I access the settings for the router? And where can I activate the wireless function?

Type 10.0.0.2 into your browser and hit Enter.
Wireless should be enabled by default - check if the wireless LED is on. If not enable it under "Wireless" on your menu at 10.0.0.2.
Change your password while you're in there.
If you stuggle read the manual on the CD.

simply browse (in IE, Firefox or whatever) to your router's IP. I'm not sure what the default is for the Mega 100WR, it might be http://10.0.0.1 though. Your documentation should give the default IP though.

Fresh : The default IP is 10.0.0.2.

If you look in the /manuals folder on the instalation CD, you will find a PDF file "Easyt start guide" . I sugest that you read the chapter on using a web browser to configure.

As a matter of interest, the wireless AP is enabled by default, and set to WPK encryption , with a Unique key that you will find on a label on the bottom of your router.

hope that this helps,

hi All.

Spidey : Thanks. We would be glad to get to the bottom this issue. Thanks
for your help.

Ratsalad :
Now, that is a question ....... it’s almost impossible to answer.
No, that’s not just me taking the easy way out either - let me
give a lengthy explanation, since this is quite a common question.

Radio signals, particularly of the frequencies used in 802.11b/g
transmission, travel in what is know as "line of sight" paths. This
means, that, instead of traveling through things like walls, they
bounce around them. Basically this means that in order to travel
your 10 meters through 2 walls, the signal may have to actually
travel 30 meters, bounce off 6 walls and pass through 2 windows -
All of which will reduce the signal strength dramatically..
Alternatively, it could be a simple path that just causes the signal
to travel 10 meters and pass through 2 windows, in which case, it
is almost certain that a connection will be made and decent
speeds achieved (there may also be no path at all, so connection
would then be impossible). Unfortunately, I do not know your site,
where you are putting the router etc, so I cannot predict range.
Range is further limited by local interference - are there other
things nearby that can cause radio interference - things like other
routers, fluorescent lights etc.?

Generally, there are ways to improve range for a given
environment, such as increasing power output or putting an Arial
with more gain on the router. Unfortunately, the output power is
limited by law, to around 120 mW , if I recall correctly, so the
only option that you have to increase range if you do not have
control on the external factors (interference etc) or on the internal
factors (walls, positioning of router) would be to change the
antenna. Be warned though, that this also has its disadvantages,
since all antennae do is to "focus" the signal, and don't generate
any additional power, so if you increase the signal strength in one
direction, you are loosing out in another direction - of cause, this
may not be a problem. Also remember, that data comms is a 2
direction communication, so whatever signal path you are dealing
with, you will need both the router and the PC's card to have
enough power/receive sensitivity to make
the connection

Another point to remember: there are 2 sorts of people that are
involved in getting the router to you: Engineers and Sales people.
Because they know about the above info, and the many other
factors that are involved, I doubt that you will
find an engineer that will be prepared to give you any range figures
other than open air ranges - that is the theoretical max. Range.
Sales people, on the other hand, are quite likely to take that figure,
and advertise it as a sales point. This is not limited to Telkom or our
organization, but is a worldwide trend. There is also trend to not
acknowledge that in some situations, wireless communications
will just not work.

This is, of cause, a summery of the story of Wireless range, but it
should be enough to give you an idea.
The best that I could do is comment on the open air range - the
range when there are no walls in the way, and also tell you that I
regularly get in excess of 10 meters in my office. I would suggest
that you find a friend with a laptop that has a built-in Wireless
card, and test your situation first, before you spend the money on
the cards.

Hope that this helps.

thanks. do i use my internet account username and password to log in? It gives a 'bad username' error when I do do.

Fresh : as it says in the Quick start guide, the default username / password is admin / admin

I've got the MW100 (closer) modem, and about 4 of my clients have them. ALL of them make that horrid noise. I'm currently in the room with the modem about 5m away, and I can hear it.

Range is good though. Get about 15m through at least 2 walls...

Hi, I have a wonderful Mega 100WR (closer) router from telkom that I have connected to a USB Wifi connection on my PC. This is a SENAO 362EXT. My signal strength is excellent as I have also put a 9Dbi antenna on my Router.

How exactly do you attach an antennae to the router, well I mean what kind of connection does it have for the antennae. If I get my ADSL with this router then I'll have my old iBurst 18Dbi antennae which should be pretty good seeing as it gets me iBurst signal from 4km or so away. :)

I bought a 2.4 GHz 9 dBi Omnidirectional Wireless LAN Antenna With Magnetic Base HG2409MGRD-RSP from a company caled Miro (www.miro.co.za) Can't tell you what the fitting is called, but they can advise.

2C, I'm having a bit of an odd issue with a Mega 100WR2 with one of my customers. I set up wireless for her, and it was working fine from her study for a couple of weeks. Then she reported that her wireless link on her PC would disconnect and reconnect every 10 min or so.

I went around yesterday, and her wireless was not connecting at all; it could see the router, but would sit forever trying to get a connection. I replaced my customer's Zyxel USB wireless adapter with a D-Link USB wireless adapter, and I got exactly the same results. It was almost as if the wireless signal was going up and down all the time.

I tried changing authentication methods, restarting the router, etc. with no luck. The router has the latest firmware.

Any ideas?

I also had a problem with my Mega 100WRs' range (AZTME1). Right next to the router, I'd only get a signal strength of about 60%. 4 meters away NOTHING. After reading this and other posts, I heard my modem making a whining, high pitched sound (like described above). I probably was doing it from the start, but with the noise my PC's fan makes, I didn't realize it. So I took the modem back to the Telkom store, and got a new one (Mega 100WR2 - AZTME2 this time). Plugged it in at the store to check that it's silent, and now I get wireless all over my house (furthest I've tested is 20 meters away, through 4 walls - 50% signal strength, 90% quality).

So if you're having problems with your wireless range, listen to your modem closely (put your ear on it), switch it off, and back on again. If you hear a high freq noise while it's on, and silent when it's off, take it back. My guess is that whatever is making that high freq noise is interfering big time with the wifi signal.

Interestingly the new mode has a DoBroadband logo on it. Hopefully I can remove it with a Minora blade or something. I don't want to be associated with a Telkom scam like that.

rbarryza, rather not remove the logo. Just in case something goes wrong with it again, then they'll say the warranty is void due to the removal of the logo. ATM I have my Mega 100WR stashed under my desk running through LAN.

The wifi signal on my Mega 100wr is terrible, even with my DLINK internal antenna - SUXORZ

Hi All.

The Wi-Fi range of the Mega 100Wr is Good (or should be) ... I can boldly say that for certain ... after much testing ... however, there seems to be a definite correlation between the noise that some units seem to exhibit, and poor Wi-Fi range! And I think that I understand why, in theory at least ... so far, I have not been able to get my hands on a noisy unit, in spite of having checked many hundreds, and having requested it from the people that handle the returned units! Is there anyone in the Southern Suburbs of Cape Town that has such a noisy unit that I might be able to get hold off? That would help with finding out what the problem is.
