So I finally bit the bullet and upgraded my firmware to that provided by Routertech. why? Because I can. And because I trust them to do a better job than Telkom (see the last firmware update). So if you are feeling adventurous you can go ahead and do it.
NOTE: If you do decide to try it, if you brick your router I will not be held responsible.
Download Router Upgrade Check. Unzip and run the file ruc.exe. For Linux users, running ruc.exe requires you boot into Windows. I tried running it with wine without success. Once it finishes running, it will recommend which firmware you should download if your router meets the requirements. RUC has options to backup your current router environment. Use that feature.
It advised me to download routertech-ar7wrd-pspboot-firmware-4ports-20100408.zip. Unzip the file.
The actual thread for the firmware is here. I strongly recommend you read it.
The following was done after reading the instructions in the firmware zip.
1. I reset the router to its default settings (this is done by pressing the button marked Reset at the back of the router). Press the button for 10+ seconds.
2. I then logged into the router (username - admin / password - admin)
3. Went to the section that provides for router upgrading (I have forgotten where it is so if someone would be so kind to post the path).
4. Clicked on the browse icon and then pointed that to the file RouterTech_3.6.0D_20100408_2.93_AR7WRD_psbl_firmware.upgrade.img.
5. Clicked on Update Gateway
6. The instructions state that you must wait for at least 7 minutes for the process to finish. I waited 10 minutes after it said the upload was complete.
7. The IP address of the router will change from 10.0.0.2 to 192.168.1.1. All you need do is to restart the network component of your OS.
8. Once networking is restarted, point your web browser to 192.168.1.1 (username - Admin / password - Admin). The capitalisation is not by mistake.
9. Now you need to go to restore the settings to default (System --> Restore Defaults).
10. Once the router reboots and you log in again, you will need to delete the quickstart profile as it only caters for PPPoA connections. Then create a new connection with your details. Click Apply. Then System --> Save All. Then Restart.
EDIT: WARNING: once you upgrade to this firmware you will not be able to go back to the telkom 99.70.2 firmware. Though this may just be due to Telkom providing a dud download on their site. I've been able to flash back to all other versions of the Mega firmware Telkom provides.
EDIT: Original firmware can be found here
