So I finally bit the bullet and upgraded my firmware to that provided by Routertech. why? Because I can. And because I trust them to do a better job than Telkom (see the last firmware update). So if you are feeling adventurous you can go ahead and do it.

NOTE: If you do decide to try it, if you brick your router I will not be held responsible.

Download Router Upgrade Check. Unzip and run the file ruc.exe. For Linux users, running ruc.exe requires you boot into Windows. I tried running it with wine without success. Once it finishes running, it will recommend which firmware you should download if your router meets the requirements. RUC has options to backup your current router environment. Use that feature.

It advised me to download routertech-ar7wrd-pspboot-firmware-4ports-20100408.zip. Unzip the file.

The actual thread for the firmware is here. I strongly recommend you read it.

The following was done after reading the instructions in the firmware zip.

1. I reset the router to its default settings (this is done by pressing the button marked Reset at the back of the router). Press the button for 10+ seconds.

2. I then logged into the router (username - admin / password - admin)

3. Went to the section that provides for router upgrading (I have forgotten where it is so if someone would be so kind to post the path).

4. Clicked on the browse icon and then pointed that to the file RouterTech_3.6.0D_20100408_2.93_AR7WRD_psbl_firmware.upgrade.img.

5. Clicked on Update Gateway

6. The instructions state that you must wait for at least 7 minutes for the process to finish. I waited 10 minutes after it said the upload was complete.

7. The IP address of the router will change from 10.0.0.2 to 192.168.1.1. All you need do is to restart the network component of your OS.

8. Once networking is restarted, point your web browser to 192.168.1.1 (username - Admin / password - Admin). The capitalisation is not by mistake.

9. Now you need to go to restore the settings to default (System --> Restore Defaults).

10. Once the router reboots and you log in again, you will need to delete the quickstart profile as it only caters for PPPoA connections. Then create a new connection with your details. Click Apply. Then System --> Save All. Then Restart.

EDIT: WARNING: once you upgrade to this firmware you will not be able to go back to the telkom 99.70.2 firmware. Though this may just be due to Telkom providing a dud download on their site. I've been able to flash back to all other versions of the Mega firmware Telkom provides.

EDIT: Original firmware can be found here

by any remote chance will this upgrade work on the P.O.S. mega105wr ?

I wouldn't mind doing it.... but I will wait for the others to try it first! lol

jirm - i don't know. you could run Router Upgrade Check to see if it recommends you can use it.

@milomak, I have been looking at obtaining an updated and more functional firmware for my mega100wr2.

I would be interested to know what your experiences have been like with the new Router Tech Firmare

Besides the fact that it is not possible to add static routes via the shell, it hasn't given me any issues. Wifi works as well. What is your reason for wanting to update your current firmware?

@milomak , been battling to use remote access, had it first when I was running windows home server.

I obtained my dyndns details and everytime, inpot them it brings me to the router screen, despite that the ports are forwarded correctly.

I am trying to set me up a torrentflux box , but I still get dropped off at the log in screen.

I have followed all the port forward instructs to the T and still I end up on the log in screen.

I'll try out the dyndns this evening. How do I set up the port forwarding?

So I finally got rounf to getting my Linksys WRT54GL to use as my router that will split traffic between local and international. This meant that my Mega100WR2 was to be relegated to working in bridge mode. I have to say I struggled to setup bridge on this firmware.

I thought it would be a simple case of setting the connection to bridge and away I go. However this proved to cause some issues. So I decided to reinstall the telkom firmware back to the router.

EDIT: Thinking about it, there might have been something which I was doing wrong which I will check.

@milomak: How exactly did you back up /proc/ticfg/env to your hard drive? I haven't managed to to that yet.

I've been able to flash back to all other versions of the Mega firmware Telkom provides
Does that mean you have been able to flash to a higher version and then back down to a lower version?

p.s. Do you know of any other 3rd party firmware for the Telkom MEGA 100WR2? (I know DD-WRT won't work)

i see that your question is answered here

I flashed up and down between the telkom firmware versions.

The Routertech firmware is all I ever used.

Sorry for the thread revival but do all versions of RouterTech firmware work with the Mega100WR2?

Routertech has the Routercheck software that will tell which of their firmware to use.

I have a question for the telkom firmware. since i have updated the router it no longer assigns DNS to my pc's any ideas?, it still gives the ip address & default gateway but i have to assign a manual DNS??

Danx

Will this work with a normal Mega 100WR ?
If you had checked the first post you would have seen:

and yes... it should work.
