Memory and solid-state storage prices surge

Are guys seriously scalping? Like buying a kakhuis full of ram and reselling or what?

Sounds like too much effort. And then the bubble bursts, and you sit with 2 TB of DDR5. I guess then atleast you can play Crisis or whatever the most resource-hungry game that is currently the flavour.

Maybe I should rip out all the RAM of these old machines that I have around. And retire for a day.

Being a scalper should be punishable by hanging.

Are you guys all suddenly upgrading your RAM? What amazing games are there that warrant this?
If it's for work, write it off tax and charge a little bit more.

Go thank these clowns:
There's a psychologist somewhere who can have a field day analyzing the prompts used to create these :)

RAM used to be the cheapest part of a machine to upgrade. Suddenly we're living in a world where it's the single most expensive part in the machine.

The trend also shows no signs of slowing. Soon it will cost more than the entire rest of the machine put together.

It's nuts.

Nope that's not entirely true, there have been plenty of times RAM has been expensive, mid 90s you'd pay up to 400 dollars for 8megs.
This isn't the first time that we've had things like this. That's the problem when there's only 3 big manufacturers.

Yes RAM was very expensive in the 90s. In the late 90s became cheaper though.

And then went expensive around 2005, 2010 and 2016/2017 it's swings.
Remember there are only 3 big manufacturers of RAM really

Would you actually find a buyer though? I'm selling a 16 GB DDR4 RAM stick for the NEVER TO BE REPEATED OFFER OF ONLY R9999. 512 GB SSD FOR JUST R4999. Don't miss out!

It still baffles me how any of us got into PC gaming in the 1990's considering the cost at the time. For a fraction of the price, you could have imported a grey market SNES and all the games you wanted and had much more fun. Then the PSX came along and it was still far cheaper than the Voodoo 2.

Cause building the PC was fun, you also started with a 286, moved onto a 386, or what I eventually did would be to upgrade family and friends PCs for the cost of their old parts :-).

Last week's update from one of our suppliers, The inflated prices are likely to be the norm throughout 2026.

  • GPU shortage is already happening (the popular AI GPU models you all know well). As of now, pre-order / forecast commitment is strongly suggested. Without pre-order / forecast, production lead time can exceed 26 weeks starting in January 2026.
  • CPU prices increase by 10% monthly; lead time is worsening. The situation will continue into Q2 2026.
  • RAM / SSD / HDD prices increase by 11% weekly (starting in October 2025); lead time is worsening (in some cases, no supply at all). The situation will continue into Q3 2026. Some high-capacity RAM models have already seen more than 200% price hike since August.
  • Network card prices increase by 6 to 8% monthly; lead time is worsening. The situation will continue into Q3 2026
  • RAID card / HBA prices and lead times are relatively stable; price increase around 8% per quarter.
  • Worldwide hyperscalers and major CSPs are straight bulk buying components whenever they find available stock in the market.

I only started with a 486 in 1994 which was obsolete only two years later. Upgrading to a Pentium was not exactly cheap and there were always hassles involved. Windows 95 also sucked.

I remember discovering true gaming happiness with the PSX in 1998 and I didn't play many PC games after that. Then PS2, 360, PS4, PS5.

For years, graphics cards were unaffordable and now it's RAM and SSD's. PC gaming has always been a headache and a money sink for most of its life span. I have a mini PC and a non-gaming laptop for work purposes and that's all I need. IBM never intended the PC to be a games machine in 1981 and we should have listened.
