Memory (RAM) brands?

Hey guys,

I know we have a fair few resellers on here, as well as many others with plenty PC experience, so I thought I'd run something past you guys.

As stated elsewhere I am looking for some more RAM for my laptop and am going to go 2 x 2Gb DDR2 667Mhz. This will be a decent upgrade from my current 2 x 512Mb.

Now the thing is I have tracked down some Hynix 2Gb sticks at R389. The questions are :

1. Do any of you know where/if this notebook RAM can be acquired cheaper, any decent brand? I have checked our friend's, Esquire's, price list and they don't show 2Gb modules.

2. What is Hynix like as a brand? I have never heard of them before. I am not interested in really expensive RAM and prior to finding this I was considering Kingston Value RAM.

I have 2x 2GB Kingston DDR2 667 modules in my Thinkpad T61, no probs.

Just stick with a major brand with a good warranty, install the ram, memtest86+ it for 3-5 passes and bob's your uncle.

It depends on the chipset, imho. The Intel 965 will clock down from what I've read.
 
I think their might have been other issues with that RAM you used, but I have used 800 RAM in 667 machines without hassle. Could be voltage related.

Can't go wrong with Hynix. You will also find their chips on other branded RAM.
 
I have used ddr 800 ram on many ddr 667 systems and never had a problem, it just runs at 667. Hynix uses samsung memory which you will find on many ram sticks :D.
 
I might just go with the Hynix 667Mhz RAM then as it means stopping in and picking it up and not relying on delivery (and the cost associated with that).
 
Ok, now I am just confusing myself! I am doing some reading and seem to be getting conflicting reports on the maximum RAM supported by my laptop, so I downloaded the manual and it just adds to the confusion!

What does this mean :

Main Memory
Maximum Size: Each slot is 1024MB and can be expanded to 2048MB.

SO DIMM Type for Memory Expansion: DDR2 SDRAM SO-DIMM (256MB, 512MB, 1024MB)

What is the maximum memory then?!?!?!?!?! 2048Mb total or 2048 per slot?
